About the Department

Catawba County’s Child Advocacy and Protection Center (CAPC) is seeking a highly skilled, part-time Medical Office Assistant (MOA) to coordinate and assist the Medical Director during forensic medical evaluations for children under investigation with Law Enforcement and/or Child Protective Services for abuse or severe neglect. This position plays a critical role in direct patient care, medical evidence collection, provider credentialing, billing, HIPAA compliance, and overall clinic operations.


We are seeking someone who is dependable, with a strong attention to detail, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to navigate high-stress situations with empathy and professionalism. Experience working with children, especially those with trauma histories, is strongly preferred.


This position is part-time, working 20 hours per week, and receives benefits (prorated at 50%).

Position Duties

  • Coordinate child medical evaluations with Law Enforcement, Child Protective Services (DSS), and the Medical Director
  • Coordinate with DSS/Law Enforcement to collect history and records prior to the exam
  • Prepare and support patients during sensitive forensic medical exams
  • Assist with evidence collection (e.g., sexual assault kits) and operate medical photography equipment
  • Maintain accurate and confidential medical records, including file creation, documentation, and compliance tracking
  • Coordinate insurance credentialing and re-credentialing for medical and mental health providers
  • File and manage billing claims, appeal denials as necessary
  • Stay informed of ongoing changes in Medicaid and private insurance policies to ensure accurate billing, coding, and reimbursement
  • Monitor and maintain medical supply inventory and clinical equipment, including AED system verification
  • Fulfill HIPAA Compliance Officer duties, including annual training compliance and policy updates
  • Provide notary services as needed
  • Participate in Multidisciplinary Team meetings and support overall CAPC operations
  • Respond to after-hours and weekend on-call responsibilities as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Medical Office Assisting, plus certification from an accredited institution as a Medical Office Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant; OR
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent plus certification from an accredited institution as a Medical Office Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant and 1 year of experience as a Medical Office Assistant; OR
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and 2 years of experience as a Medical Office Assistant; OR
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent plus certification from an accredited institution as a Certified Nursing Assistant and 2 years of experience as a Medical Office Assistant

Other Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to quickly and easily build rapport across populations
  • Strong knowledge of pediatric care, child development, and trauma-informed practices
  • Sufficient knowledge of child protection and law enforcement systems
  • Experience with HIPAA compliance, billing, coding, and insurance credentialing
  • Strong computer skills and record management skills
  • Ability to remain calm and supportive in high-pressure situations containing highly sensitive content
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills 
  • Must be dependable, self-motivated, and team-oriented
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism and make changes accordingly
  • Willingness/ability to work a flexible schedule, include evenings and occasional weekends as needed
  • This position is considered light work; ability to lift up to 20 pounds.  


Preferences:

  • Experience in pediatric or trauma-focused healthcare settings
