Job Summary

You'll be instrumental in shaping the future of our technical landscape, focusing on vital infrastructure evolution, optimising environments, and refining CI/CD processes. Part of a dedicated platform sub-team, you’ll be building the foundations on which our core systems operate, offering crucial technical guidance to colleagues and internal customers, and actively developing individuals to foster their growth.

Team Summary

The post sits within Digital and Data Services (DDS) Technical Operations, a growing team who are responsible for the ongoing development, delivery and support of over 20 digital services to internal users and our customers and suppliers, attaining a system uptime across these services of over 99.9%. The post reports to the Lead Cloud Engineer and will have line management responsibility for at least one Cloud Engineer.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead and guide team members, manage performance to ensure a high-performing team, and support staff development through regular feedback

  • Guide the platform team's workstreams, delivering impactful infrastructure projects, including migrating and rebuilding existing infrastructure from legacy architecture to a Platform Engineering approach.

  • Standardise and manage CI/CD processes, promoting automation at every stage

  • Continuously review and recommend enhancements for the existing AWS estate, identifying areas for optimisation and increased efficiency

  • Develop self-service tooling through Internal Developer Portals (IDP), working with Development, QA, and TechOps to deliver products (platforms) that meet their requirements.

  • Harmonise lower environments with Production and embed environment management processes

  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers.

  • Create comprehensive documentation for platform tooling, CI/CD, and IaC.

Essential Criteria (to be assessed at application stage):

  • Cloud & Production Expertise: Extensive experience with production-grade infrastructure, particularly AWS (VPC, EC2, Load Balancers, S3, RDS, Lambda, API Gateway, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, IAM, CloudFront).

  • Infrastructure as Code: Deep expertise with Terraform, Ansible would be a plus

  • CI/CD Migration Experience: Hands-on experience with CI/CD platforms (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Travis CI), especially within migration projects (e.g., from TravisCI, AWS CodePipeline to Jenkins).

  • Containerisation: Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes, in particular AWS ECS and EKS.

  • Proficient in Bash, Python, or Go.
