Position Summary
Baldwin Wallace University is seeking a detail-oriented and employee-focused HR Generalist – Benefits & Compliance to join our small but high-impact HR team. This role will oversee day-to-day administration of our self-insured benefits plans, manage leave-of-absence processes, and support compliance across key HR functions. The Generalist will serve as a key liaison to vendors and employees, ensuring accurate, timely, and service-centered support.

Key Responsibilities
Benefits Administration
- Administer all aspects of self-insured health, dental, vision, life, and disability plans, including enrollment, eligibility, and terminations
- Audit and reconcile benefits invoices
- Support annual open enrollment: testing system, communications, and employee assistance
- Provide timely and clear responses to employee benefit questions and escalations
- In collaboration with benefits broker and HR leadership, maintain and update related compliance documents (ex: SPD’s & compliance disclosures)
Leave Management
- Administer FMLA, ADA, short-term and long-term disability leaves
- Track leave usage and return-to-work status in coordination with managers, payroll team and HRBP
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional leave policies
Compliance & Reporting
- Assist with internal audits, salary surveys and required government reporting
- Workers compensation & Unemployment support
HR Operations Support
- Assist in policy review and process improvement related to benefits and compliance
- Partner with payroll team to ensure accurate deductions and leave accounting
- Provide employee relations support
- Support the implementation and documentation of consistent, compliant HR processes across the employee lifecycle
- Crosstrain in other areas of HR as needed to support a small team
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in HR, business, or related field; or equivalent work experience
- 3+ years of progressive HR experience, including benefits and leave administration
- Familiarity with self-funded health plans and vendor coordination
- Understanding of FMLA, ADA, HIPAA, COBRA, and ACA requirements
- High attention to detail and strong problem-solving ability
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and HRIS systems
Preferred:
- Experience in higher education, healthcare, nonprofit, or public sector
- Experience with retirement plans (403(b), 401(k) and/or tuition remission policies
