The preferred location for this position is within the National Capital Region, but remote work will be considered.
The Junior Geomatics Programmer will support the design, development, implementation, and management of an enterprise spatial data management system and information services to enable our Client- Partners in the Department of National Defence (DND) to manage their portfolio of real property. The incumbent will play a key developer role in building interactive mapping solutions, integrating spatial data, and maintaining optimal performance of the enterprise geospatial systems.
KEY AND PERIODIC ACTIVITIES
The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative but not all-inclusive:
Primary
- Assist in designing, developing and maintaining GIS web applications using ESRI tools and open-source libraries
- Support the integration of spatial data into enterprise systems
- Collaborate with senior developers, analysts, and stakeholders
- Document workflows, scripts, and application features
- Participate in testing and troubleshooting of applications
- Perform database design and maintenance activities
- Perform data quality assurance and control activities
- Program system enhancements
- Develop and maintain effective relationships within DCC, and with industry, the Client-Partners and/or stakeholders
- Ensure quality standards are met, in line with corporate and Client-Partner expectations
Other
- Update geospatial data standards
- Support and/or lead business development activities
- Manage risk
- Other duties as assigned
SKILLS
General and Specific Knowledge
- Best practices, methods, trends and legislation in GIS
- Familiarity with ESRI technologies (ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server)
- Basic knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
- Exposure to open-source GIS tools (e.g., QGIS, Leaflet, GDAL)
- Understanding of spatial data formats (e.g., Shapefiles, GeoJSON, KML)
- Working knowledge of coordinate systems and map projections
- Familiarity with version control systems such as Git
- Preference for experience with Python (e.g., ArcPy, Jupyter Notebooks), spatial databases (e.g., PostGIS, SQL Server), and web mapping frameworks (e.g., Leaflet, MapLibre)
- Project and risk management principles
Formal Education and/or Certification(s) and Experience
- Minimum: college diploma in geomatics/GIS, computer science or related field with four years’ relevant experience, or the equivalent
- Preferred: university degree in computer science, software engineering, geomatics/GIS or related field
Abilities
- Use applicable computer software and operating systems
- Apply project and risk management techniques
DEVELOPMENT AND LEADERSHIP
- Provide functional advice and guidance to employees and the Client-Partners
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Typical office environment with occasional travel
- Some work may be located on construction sites; incumbent may occasionally be required to wear basic safety equipment
