JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for maintaining the appearance, safety, and cleanliness of City of Thomaston grounds, parks, facilities, and rights-of-way. Work involves landscaping, groundskeeping, and minor maintenance to ensure public spaces are safe, attractive, and well-kept for residents and visitors.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Mows grass, trims hedges, edges lawns, and blows leaves on city property, parks, and rights-of-way.
- Performs seasonal grounds and park work, including planting flowers and shrubs, mulching, watering, pruning, and removing debris.
- Maintains park amenities such as benches, picnic tables, playgrounds, and walking trails.
- Assists in setup and cleanup for city events held in parks and public spaces.
- Operates and maintains grounds equipment such as riding mowers, push mowers, weed eaters, blowers, and edgers.
- Performs basic preventive maintenance on tools, equipment, and vehicles (checking fluid levels, replacing blades, cleaning, and making minor repairs).
- Assists with basic carpentry, repairs, and small construction projects as needed.
- Reports safety hazards, damaged park equipment, or maintenance needs promptly.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of City of Thomaston policies, safety procedures, and work standards.
- Knowledge of grounds, parks, and landscape maintenance practices.
- Skill in operating grounds equipment and hand tools safely and effectively.
- Ability to perform routine equipment maintenance.
- Ability to communicate clearly with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Director of Public Works assigns work and provides general instructions. Completed work is reviewed for compliance with standards and safety requirements.
GUIDELINES
Work follows established city policies, safety rules, and specific work orders. Situations not covered by guidelines require independent judgment.
COMPLEXITY
The work consists of recurring grounds and park maintenance duties. Weather conditions, seasonal changes, and special event needs may add complexity.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, and lifting of light and heavy objects.
- Climbing ladders and operating equipment requiring manual dexterity.
- Ability to distinguish colors when working with landscaping or safety materials.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Primarily outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Exposure to noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, and moving equipment.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, goggles, and masks is required.
