Leaning Technologies is seeking a talented Software Engineer for a a part-time technical product support role based in our UK office at Nexus, on the University of Leeds campus. This is a flexible, part time position, designed to be ideal for people seeking a stable part-time role, including students. 

The role is available immediately (August 2025), with an initial duration of 3 months, and the possibility to extend further. Interns and part-timers often go on to join the company for longer periods of time. 

We make software development tools, such as compilers, virtual machines and JVMs, that target the Browser and WebAssembly. One of our products, called CheerpJ (website, docs), is a JVM/JRE in WebAssembly for the browser, and is used to run Java applications on modern browsers. CheerpJ powers Java applications used by over 300,000 users, and has been used by large organisations worldwide since 2017.


We are looking for an eager software engineer with an interest in modern web technologies and WebAssembly, to provide pre-sales integration and testing support to organisations that are exploring CheerpJ. This is a great opportunity to be exposed to state of the art WebAssembly technology, and to work with an exceedingly talented team of WebAssembly and compiler experts.


REQUIREMENTS

  • Undergraduate or postgraduate student studying Computer Science, or a related discipline with equivalent experience

  • Self-taught candidates also considered

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Interest in modern Web technologies including WebAssembly
  • Basic knowledge of Java
  • Leeds location


ROLE


You will work on:

  • Supporting customers in integrating and testing different CheerpJ solutions, including CheerpJ itself, the CheerpJ JNLP runner, and the CheerpJ Applet Runner

  • Replicate, diagnose and resolve issues with the integration of CheerpJ on existing infrastructure that includes Java components

  • Communicate with prospective customers and CheerpJ developers 

  • Provide support to the technical sales team

  • Develop and improve CheerpJ documentation

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Hybrid - based in our Leeds office, but work from anywhere if you need to (in-office at least 1 day per week, most weeks)

  • Paid leave pro-rata, 31 days off for a FTE 

  • At least 16 hours per week, but ideally 20 hours, spread over at least four working days per week.

  • Ability to adjust around your schedule, particularly during term time if a student

  • Ability to study from our office on the University of Leeds campus (Nexus building)
