Job Title: Residential Advocate   

Home Office: Anna, IL; Vienna, IL or Karnak,IL 

Area of Focus: Behavioral Health

Program(s): 830 - Supervised Residential: The Supervised Residential Program provides adults living with substantial levels of mental illness or disability with 24/7 services through recovery-oriented community residential facilities.

Position Summary: The Residential Advocate provides direct care and support to individuals residing in Arrowleaf’s recovery-oriented community residential facilities. These individuals experience substantial psychiatric disabilities and meet medical necessity criteria as determined by the Illinois Department of Mental Health. This position plays a critical role in the delivery of structured, person-centered, 24/7 residential care that promotes recovery, safety, and independence. Staff in this role are required to remain awake and on-site during all scheduled shifts and will implement therapeutic interventions, skills training, and case management services consistent with Medicaid Rule 140 and Part 132 guidelines.

Immediate Supervisor: Residential Services Director (once hired). 

Hours of Work: Full-time 40 hours/ week.

Residential Advocate Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field required. Must meet the qualifications of a Mental Health Professional (MHP) as defined in Illinois Administrative Code (Part 132). Prior experience working with individuals with behavioral health needs is strongly preferred.

Residential Advocate Special Requirements: Maintain and provide proof of a valid driver's license; must have reliable transportation; maintain and provide proof of personal vehicle liability insurance; at least 21 years of age; must complete required registry clearances and criminal fingerprint background checks; maintains CPR & First Aid training requirements; ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight shifts as scheduled. 

Residential Advocate Skills & Competencies:  Knowledge of behavioral health conditions and effective treatment strategies. Proficient in using de-escalation techniques and responding to crises. Strong documentation, communication, and interpersonal skills. Commitment to recovery-oriented and trauma-informed principles. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Residential Advocate Working Conditions: This position requires being awake and on-site during all scheduled shifts. May involve exposure to challenging behaviors and situations involving mental health crises. Physical demands include standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 25 lbs., and assisting clients with physical needs.

Residential Advocate job duties include, but not limited to
  • Provide 24-hour supervision and support in a safe, structured residential setting.
  • Deliver Medicaid-eligible behavioral health services, including community support and case management activities.
  • Implement individualized treatment plans through daily coaching, skill-building, behavioral interventions, and recovery-focused interactions.
  • Support residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), including hygiene, meal preparation, medication prompting, and community integration.
  • Document service delivery in compliance with Medicaid and agency standards using electronic health records.
  • Monitor, assess, and report client behaviors and symptoms to clinical staff to support individualized treatment planning.
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques and behavior management strategies to respond to psychiatric crises and maintain safety.
  • Support a trauma-informed, person-centered environment that encourages residents’ engagement in recovery.
  • Participate in staff meetings, supervision, and ongoing training to maintain required credentials and competencies.
  • Maintain facility cleanliness, organization, and safety in compliance with agency policies and regulatory requirements.
