About the Department
Under direct supervision, is responsible for assisting inmates in the Adult Detention Center or Jail Annex Libraries; searches for legal reading materials; obtains additional reading materials from outside sources; interprets legal terminology; maintains request logs; schedules inmates to attend law library; notarizes legal documents; makes copies; orders and maintains equipment, materials and supplies; and performs related duties as required.
Position Duties
- Assists inmates in searching for legal reading materials in the Adult Detention Center or Jail Annex Libraries
- Interacts with other local libraries to obtain legal reading materials not available at Adult Detention Center or Jail Annex Libraries
- Assists inmates in interpreting legal terminology
- Maintains logs of materials requested by inmates
- Schedules inmates to attend law library and maintains records
- Shelves and files legal reading materials
- Notarizes legal documents such as motions for inmates filing court appeals
- Copies legal reading materials not available to inmates
- Orders and maintains equipment, materials and supplies
- Performs other duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
- High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, supplemented by college-level course work and one (1) year experience in a library or legal studies; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of basic computer operations; knowledge of installation and use of legal research software
- Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations; skill in operating personal computer, typewriter and basic office equipment; skill in operating 10-key adding machine
- Ability to accurately maintain accounts; ability to verbally communicate effectively; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, outside organizations/vendors, and the public
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
- Bi-lingual in English & Spanish
- Constantly working in indoor conditions
- Occasionally moves items weighing up to 10 pounds
- Occasionally moves about the office
- Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
- Positions self to perform essential functions
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position
