Primary Purpose:
The Program Specialist for Dyslexia will support district-wide implementation of dyslexia services by providing expertise in dyslexia identification, intervention strategies, staff training, and compliance with state and federal guidelines. The role focuses on improving academic outcomes for students with dyslexia through coaching, professional development, and instructional support.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree in education or related field (Master’s degree preferred)
Valid Texas teaching certificate
Certification or training in dyslexia identification and intervention (e.g., CALT, LDT, or equivalent preferred)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of dyslexia characteristics, screening tools, and intervention practices
Strong understanding of Texas Dyslexia Handbook and applicable state laws
Ability to analyze student performance data and recommend instructional strategies
Effective communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
Ability to train and coach campus personnel
Experience:
Minimum 3 years of successful teaching experience
Experience working with students with dyslexia or related reading disabilities
Experience in designing or delivering staff development is preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Support & Compliance:
Assist in the development and implementation of district dyslexia procedures aligned with the Texas Dyslexia Handbook
Support campus teams in dyslexia screening, identification, and placement decisions
Monitor program compliance and documentation for state and federal accountability
Ensure appropriate instructional accommodations are implemented
Instructional Leadership:
Support the selection and implementation of evidence-based dyslexia programs and resources
Collaborate with instructional staff to develop individualized intervention plans
Provide job-embedded coaching and modeling of dyslexia intervention strategies
Training & Professional Development:
Design and deliver high-quality professional development for teachers, interventionists, and administrators on dyslexia-related topics
Serve as a resource for campuses to build capacity in identifying and serving students with dyslexia
Data & Progress Monitoring:
Other Duties:
Participate in ARD/504 meetings as needed to provide input on dyslexia services
Stay current with research, legislation, and best practices related to dyslexia
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Working Conditions:
Mental Demands: Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks simultaneously; maintain emotional control under stress
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Frequent travel within the district; occasional extended hours and weekend work
*Salary is commensurate with experience
