Job Description
Block’s Product Platform Engineering organisation is responsible for the build, deployment, monitoring and maintenance of the company’s cloud infrastructure across the Square, Cash App, and Afterpay products. Our work enables product developers to focus on building new product features leveraging our highly available infrastructure platform. It is our objective to ensure product development teams can provision new services to the platform quickly, easily and safely.
This role is with the Traffic Engineering team who are responsible for the secure design, implementation, maintenance and scaling of service meshes across multiple products. We also help enable connectivity across the wider Block group.
Being based in Australia will give you particular proximity to internal Afterpay customers as well as other product and platform teams across the wider organisation (Block, Square, Cash App).
- You are familiar with Kubernetes as well as Cloud and networking concepts
- You can explain the difference between an AWS NLB or an ALB
- If you are familiar with Istio or service meshes in general that is a plus
- Our expectation is to configure everything with code - mostly terraform, and occasionally bash/python
Required skills & experience:
- 3+ years of relevant industry experience in (AWS preferred)
- You’re most at home in the shell on linux-based systems
- Proficiency in foundational tools like git, docker, bash, terraform
- Software development experience (we use Go, Python, and occasional Bash)
- Familiarity with container orchestration - Kubernetes, EKS/GKE
- Service Meshes - Istio (preferred), Envoy, Linkerd
- Public cloud platforms - AWS, GCP, Azure
- Infrastructure-as-code - Terraform, CloudFormation
- Observability - Datadog, SumoLogic, New Relic, Prometheus
- Scalable CI/CD toolchains - Buildkite, Github, Docker registries
