Position Summary

The Pingry School seeks a dynamic and intellectually engaging Upper School English Leave Replacement Teacher to join its diverse community from January 12, 2026, to June 12, 2026. The ideal candidate is committed to guiding young people as they construct their understanding of language and literature in a student-centered classroom. This educator is a collaborator with an appreciation for the teachable moment when moral and ethical questions arise in and out of the classroom. A person with consistently high standards, the candidate of choice seeks growth and learning every day, both personally and professionally, and inspires others to do the same through optimism, flexibility, and teamwork. With robust interpersonal skills, the selected candidate has a real desire to contribute to the school community by sharing their passions and through additional efforts, such as coaching teams or supervising activities.

Responsibilities

• Teach 4 courses - January 12, 2026 - June 12, 2026
• 3 sections of English 9 “Coming of Age,” guiding students through a range of classical and contemporary texts while helping them develop analytical reading, essay writing, and critical thinking skills; fostering engagement with literature through diverse cultural perspectives, thematic exploration, and thoughtful classroom discussion. 
• 1 section of Junior English Elective “Gold Rush: The Enduring Frontier Mentality of American Capitalism.” This course explores how the “gold rush mentality” shapes American ideas of risk, opportunity, and place, from the frontier to the digital age. Through literature, film, and television, students examine stories of speculation, ambition, and survival, and the social and economic forces that drive them.
• Serve as a co-advisor to a group of students.
• Collaborate cross-departmentally on the development and execution of a Spring Intensive course. 
• Fulfill any additional duties as assigned by the Upper School Director and/or English Department Head.
• Participate in all required meetings, including faculty division meetings, scheduled collaboration times, professional development days, and beginning and end-of-year.
• Provide extra English support for students during flex and community times.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in English or a related field is required; an advanced degree is preferred. 
• Rich knowledge of literary analysis and composition, a facility with a variety of teaching tools, comfort with designing courses, and fluency in various modes of inquiry.
• Experience teaching English at the high school level.
• Experience with advising students.
• Enthusiasm for working with high school students.
• Fluency with current discipline-specific pedagogy.
• Dedication to supporting the academic, social, and emotional well-being of students.
• Robust interpersonal skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Dedication to partnering collaboratively with a team of talented faculty.
• Experience creating, supporting, and sustaining a culture of access and equity in English education.
• Comfortable with incorporating the latest technology into your workflow, including  Google Classroom and Zoom.
• Skilled in navigating the Google Suite of applications (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, etc.).
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

The salary range for this position is $24,000-44,000. Final compensation will be determined based on experience and education.
