Position Summary

The Finishing Department Manager oversees all operations within the finishing department to ensure quality, efficiency, and safety standards are met. This role is responsible for managing staff, scheduling, production workflows, quality control, distribution of Finished goods and continuous improvement initiatives to support overall business goals. The Finishing Department Manager collaborates closely with Accounting, Maintenance, Customer Service, Sales, and the Manufacturing Department to deliver finished products that meet or exceed customer expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise all activities within the finishing department to meet production schedules and quality standards.
  • Lead, train, and develop finishing team members, fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, and safety.
  • Monitor workflow to maximize efficiency, reduce downtime, and ensure on-time delivery of finished goods.
  • Implement and enforce company policies, safety regulations, and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with upstream departments, sister plant, and purchasing to address bottlenecks, defects, or equipment issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of production output, labor, and materials.
  • Develop and implement continuous improvement initiatives to optimize processes, reduce waste, and enhance productivity.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching to team members.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and other applicable safety standards.
  • Manage department budgets, resources, and staffing levels effectively.

Skills & Personal Qualifications

  • Strong leadership and team management abilities with a focus on coaching and development.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; able to prioritize, delegate and multitask effectively.
  • Solid understanding of finishing processes, quality standards, and production workflows.
  • Analytical thinker with strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Effective communicator (verbal and written) with the ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Results-driven with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • High level of attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Adaptable, resilient, and able to perform well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing management, with proven leadership experience.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, equipment, and quality control standards.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop teams.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with MRP systems, reporting tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the production floor for extended periods.
  • Frequent reaching, bending, and lifting of materials or products up to 50 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity to handle equipment, tools, and finished products as needed.
  • Visual acuity to inspect products for quality and accuracy.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with varying temperatures, noise levels, and dust or fumes (with required PPE).

Work Environment

  • Fast-paced manufacturing or production setting.
  • Requires standing, walking, and working around machinery for extended periods.
  • May involve lifting up to 50 lbs. and working in varying temperatures, depending on the industry.
