Job Description:

The Director for Campus Safety is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and operation of the University’s Campus Safety Department. Campus Safety is within the Division of Operations, and the position reports to the VP and AVP for Operations. The Director is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, professional, and service-oriented environment for students, faculty, staff, Sisters of Charity of New York (SCNY), visitors, and University assets and facilities.

This position provides strategic leadership and oversight of the University’s 24/7 Campus Safety operation, including departmental staffing and supervision, patrol and response operations, campus access and visitor management, parking enforcement, security technology, emergency preparedness, incident management, and related safety programs. The Director develops, implements, and maintains policies, procedures, and practices that promote a safe and secure campus environment, support the University’s mission, and ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards.

As an essential employee, this position must remain or report for work during partial or full-day closings of the University due to hazardous or emergency conditions, including inclement weather, as needed. The Director must also be available to respond to significant incidents and emergencies outside of normal business hours.

Responsibilities:

Department Leadership and Operations

• Lead and manage the Campus Safety Department, including hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, development, and performance evaluation of Campus Safety personnel.
• Ensure appropriate 24/7 staffing, supervision, post coverage, patrol operations, and departmental readiness, addressing staffing or operational issues as necessary.
• Develop, implement, review, and enforce Campus Safety policies, procedures, post orders, emergency response protocols, parking policies, and other departmental standards, and ensure departmental personnel adhere to established University and Campus Safety policies and procedures.
• Promote a professional, service-oriented, and community-centered approach to Campus Safety and foster a culture of accountability, preparedness, and safety awareness throughout the University.

Incident Response and Emergency Preparedness

• Oversee Campus Safety response to incidents and emergencies and serve as a key member of the University’s emergency response structure. Lead Campus Safety operations during emergencies and coordinate response activities with University leadership and appropriate internal and external partners.
• Review significant incidents and departmental reports to ensure appropriate response, documentation, notification, follow-up, and referral. Coordinate with law enforcement, fire, EMS, and other agencies when incidents require outside assistance or exceed the authority of Campus Safety.
• Lead and coordinate campus emergency preparedness activities, including the development, maintenance, and periodic review of the University’s emergency response plan, evacuation and shelter-in-place procedures, fire drills, emergency exercises, and after-action reviews.
• Develop and deliver, or coordinate, safety and emergency preparedness training and awareness programs for students, faculty, staff, and Campus Safety personnel.

Physical Security, Access, and Campus Operations

• Oversee the operational use and effectiveness of campus surveillance systems, access control measures, emergency communication platforms, visitor management processes, and other Campus Safety technologies. Identify vulnerabilities and recommend improvements in coordination with Operations, Facilities, Information Technology, and other appropriate departments.
• Oversee Campus Safety responsibilities related to campus access, Main Gate operations, building security, visitor management, and other physical security measures.
• Oversee enforcement of University parking and traffic regulations and support the safe and orderly movement of vehicles and pedestrians throughout campus.
• Coordinate Campus Safety staffing, security, traffic, and access needs for major University events, special events, outside activities, and other circumstances requiring enhanced safety measures.

Compliance, Reporting, and Collaboration

• Monitor and support compliance with applicable federal, state, and local safety and security requirements, including University obligations under the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act and related requirements. Responsibilities may include crime reporting and classification, required records and logs, Campus Security Authority processes, timely warnings, emergency notifications, and preparation of the Annual Security Report in collaboration with appropriate University departments.
• Conduct and/or coordinate regular security assessments and reviews to identify safety or security vulnerabilities and recommend appropriate improvements.
• Maintain appropriate departmental records and prepare reports regarding Campus Safety operations, staffing, incidents, trends, compliance activities, and improvement initiatives for University leadership.
• Maintain effective working relationships with local law enforcement agencies, fire and emergency medical services, and other public safety partners.
• Collaborate with departments throughout the University, including Student Engagement, Residence Life, Facilities, Human Resources, Title IX, Athletics, Campus Events, Information Technology, and others, regarding incidents, safety concerns, emergency preparedness, and campus operations.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities related to Campus Safety and University operations as assigned. Must abide by all University policies and procedures.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to regularly move throughout campus buildings and grounds, including walking, standing, and navigating indoor and outdoor areas in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to respond to emergency situations and occasionally lift 50lbs or move security, emergency, or related equipment and materials.

Requirements

• Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in security management, law enforcement, or emergency management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
• Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management, or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of campus safety regulations, emergency response procedures, and best practices in security operations.
• Proven ability to manage crisis situations calmly and effectively.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to collaborate with diverse groups and work effectively in a higher education environment.
• Proficiency in security technologies, including surveillance systems, access control, and incident reporting software.
• Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Certified Campus Security Professional (CCSP), etc.) are preferred.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
