Position Title:        Assistant Professor, Clinical Faculty Appointment

Department:           Anatomic Pathology

Division:                Pathology & Laboratory Medicine

MISSION STATEMENT

 

The mission of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

 

FUNCTION

 

This is a faculty position responsible to the Chair of the Department of Anatomic Pathology, who reports to the Head of the Division of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.

 

SCOPE

 

To assume diagnostic patient care responsibilities by (a) serving as a surgical pathologist in subspecialty rotations(s), and (b) to develop and implement basic or clinical and translational research in the subspecialty field of surgical pathology appropriate for faculty rank.

KEY FUNCTIONS

 

Patient Care

·        Must be a self-motivated, highly energetic, committed and conscientious professional who communicates (verbal and written) and relates well to others at the professional, technical and administrative levels.

·        Must be able to visually review, evaluate and correctly interpret medical records, patient data, patient specimens and other test results based on previous training, experience and knowledge.

·        Must be able to visually identify specimen make-up, contents and/or components viewed through a microscope and integrate this information into diagnostic and biologically relevant information.

·        Must be able to interpret and integrate the results of microscopic and non-microscopic molecular tests into diagnostic and clinically relevant information.

·        Must be able to visually read reactions on slides, and be familiar with electron micrographs, histograms, and other image analysis systems.

·        Must be able to comprehend relevance of printed results and correlate patient data with clinical research findings.

·        Must be able to ensure that Quality Control standards are implemented and that the laboratory in which he/she is working complies with the CAP, JCAHO, FDA, Medicare, and CLIA regulations for accreditation.

·        Must be able to identify and solve problems related to job responsibilities utilizing knowledge and experience.

·        Must be able to grasp and manipulate specimen containers exercising extreme caution.

·        Must have manual dexterity for various functions with instruments used in diagnosis and research.

·        Must be able to rotate and travel to Northwest Surgical & Specialty Care Center and/or other Houston area locations for clinical service.

 

Administrative

·        Must assure compliance with standards of CAP, JCAHO, FDA, Medicare, and CLIA.

·        Must give theoretical guidance and technical assistance to laboratory personnel.

·        Must be able to interview applicants, evaluate laboratory personnel on their job performance, and make hire, terminate, promotion and merit recommendations.

·        Maintain up-to-date knowledge in field of Neuropathology and general surgical pathology.

 

Research and Development

·        Must show commitment to the clinical, applied and/or investigational aspects of Neuropathology pathology.

·        It is preferable to develop and maintain an independent research program.

·        Must be able to collaborate with other investigators at MDACC and outside this institution.

·        Must be able to design, execute, interpret and integrate scientific data for publication in peer-reviewed journals and grant applications.

·        Has demonstrated scholarly activity

·        Has evidence of originality initiative and potential for growth in research and promise for external recognition

This position has a target base salary of $251,093 to $292,708 and is eligible for incentive compensation, comprehensive health, wellness, time off, savings, and retirement benefits, as well as relocation support, as applicable.

QUALIFICATIONS:

§  MD or DO degree in a field appropriate to department mission

§  Licensed to practice in Texas

§  Must be Board certified (or obtained within departmental timeline), unless exempted

§  Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

 

EXPERIENCE:

Generally 2 years as Instructor or 5 years post clinical degree with any combination of time as a clinician, clinical scientist or GME trainee (except specialties with shorter residencies or fellowships)

·        Must be able to present lectures using visual aids to faculty, fellows, and technical personnel.

·        Must be able to train fellows, post-doctoral fellows, medical students, technologists and laboratory personnel.

·        Shows promise as an educator with the ability to educated and mentor in classrooms or one-to-one settings

 

 

 

 

Institutional Activities and Extramural Service

·        Must participate as an editor, grant, and/or manuscript reviewer.

·        Must participate in lectures for external courses, CME, and Grand Rounds.

·        Must participate in off-site conferences.

·        Must participate and/or designate time spent representing MDACC at outside conferences, events, and/or functions.
