GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK

First level in the Maintenance Worker series. Under close supervision and as a member of a crew, perform unskilled to routine  semi-skilled work to maintain and repair City streets and storm drainage system. Perform manual labor duties as assigned,  including: shoveling and spreading asphalt in patching, repairing and reconstructing streets; mowing and spraying along ditches,  curbs and sidewalks; constructing concrete forms and pouring concrete; repairing concrete drainage pipes, and striping and  painting crosswalks, dividing lines, curbing, and signs.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Provide manual assistance to other workers engaged in the maintenance of City streets and drainage systems including  the construction of streets, storm drains, and retaining walls; street patching; repair and installation of traffic control  devices; and the clearing of drainage ditches, storm drain pipes and inlets.  
  2. Use various types of hand tools including shovel, pick, spade, broom, rake, and other similar tools to dig, spread, and  remove various materials.  
  3. Load and unload materials, equipment, and supplies. 
  4. Set up and remove barricades and other traffic control devices, and provide work site protection as directed.  
  5. Operate power driven machinery such as chain saw, air hammer, air compressor, airless paint sprayer and other similarly sized equipment to accomplish maintenance tasks assigned. 
  6. Drive pickup trucks and other motorized vehicles and equipment such as dump truck, steel wheel roller, and walk behind striping machine in connection with manual work activities. 
  7. Clean tools, equipment, materials and work area. 
  8. Perform routine daily checks of equipment including fuel, fluid levels and tire pressure.   
  9. Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed. 
  10. Clear snow and apply ice melt material when weather demands it. 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Assist with other department activities or City sponsored events not under direct responsibility. 

2. Perform related tasks as required. 



Minimum Qualifications


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Basic knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques of construction, maintenance and repair activities related to the area of work assigned. 
  • Knowledge of standard safety practices and precautions applicable to tasks performed and equipment operated.  
  • Skill in operating basic tools and equipment commonly used in assigned work area. 
  • Skill in communicating in person on a one-on-one basis for the purpose of obtaining, clarifying or giving information.  
  • Ability to read and understand operation manuals and chemical application instructions. 
  • Ability to follow and understand written and verbal instructions. 
  • Ability to drive standard shift vehicles. 
  • Physical ability to perform essential job duties. 

Other Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Ability to read and write sentences with common vocabulary usually acquired through  less than high school graduation. Six months experience performing field maintenance duties, or any combination of education,  training and experience providing the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform essential job functions. 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Majority of work is outdoors in all weather conditions. Work requires lifting heavy objects, as  much as 50 lbs. a distance of four feet from the ground. Work assignments may require stooping, kneeling, crouching or  crawling in awkward positions and standing for extended periods of time, Some tasks may expose workers to harmful materials or chemicals, fumes, odors, loud noise, or dangerous machinery. May work in small, cramped spaces. Must wear all safety  equipment in accordance with safety regulations.  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Valid Commercial Driver’s License or qualified to obtain within six months of employment as  a condition of continued employment.
