Position Summary:  The Assistant Course Superintendent supports the daily operation and maintenance of the golf course grounds, assisting the Superintendent in all aspects of agronomic planning, turf management, and crew supervision. This is a hands-on role ideal for someone with turf grass experience who thrives in a team-oriented, outdoor environment.

Assistant Course Superintendent Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the planning and execution of daily maintenance tasks, including mowing, irrigation, bunker raking, and course setup.

  • Supervise and train grounds crew staff, ensuring safety protocols and maintenance standards are followed.

  • Monitor turf health and assist with implementing fertilization, pest control, and aerification programs.

  • Operate and maintain various equipment such as mowers, tractors, and utility vehicles.

  • Help oversee irrigation scheduling, troubleshooting, and repairs.

  • Assist in applying fertilizers and pesticides, maintaining accurate application records in compliance with local regulations.

  • Participate in weekend and holiday rotation schedules.

  • Communicate effectively with the Superintendent and provide input on course conditions and crew performance.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Assistant Course Superintendent Skills and Specifications:

  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

  • Working knowledge of golf course equipment and irrigation systems.

  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

  • Strong understanding of turfgrass science, soil science, pest control, irrigation, and equipment operation.

  • Proficiency with irrigation control systems (e.g., Toro, Rain Bird, etc.).

  • Familiarity with weather data analysis, GPS/GIS tools, and golf course maintenance software is a plus.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and solve problems efficiently.

  • Detail-oriented, with a commitment to high-quality standards and continuous improvement.

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physical labor.

Assistant Course Superintendent Education and Qualifications:

  • 1–3 years of experience in golf course maintenance or related turf management field.

  • Associate degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Horticulture, Agronomy, or related field preferred (not required).

  • Ability to obtain or currently hold a pesticide applicator's license (or willingness to acquire) preferred.

  • First Aid/CPR certification.

Assistant Course Superintendent Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of Assistant Course Superintendent, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. 

Assistant Course Superintendent Work Environment:

While performing the duties of Assistant Course Superintendent, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Exposure to chemicals, noise, and equipment hazards requires adherence to safety procedures. Works in a variety of weather conditions.
