With offices in 30 countries and projects in more than 100 countries, Conservation International partners with governments, companies, civil society, Indigenous peoples, and local communities to help people and nature thrive together.

POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Singapore

The Asia Pacific Technical Assistance Facility (TAF) is a multi-donor facility that is part of CI Asia Pacific, launched to provide technical support and invest in Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) projects and enabling conditions. Projects include REDD+, landscape restoration, and Blue Carbon mechanisms and the NCS Carbon Development Team which provides technical management for the origination, design, and implementation of carbon projects.

The Asia Carbon Development Team is focusing on Mount Mantalingahan, the highest peak in Palawan Province in the Philippines. The mountain range has been home to the Indigenous Pala'wan for thousands of years and provides an essential watershed for the 200,000 people who depend on it for agriculture, drinking water, and livelihoods. Like many forests in the region, the Mount Mantalingahan Protected Landscape is threatened by illegal logging, wildlife poaching, mangrove loss, agro-industrial development, and unsustainable mining. Using science-based policies designing conservation programs, and monitoring the landscape, Conservation International and the management board of the protected area aim to achieve zero net loss of forest and ecosystem services in the targeted sites.

The Asia Carbon Development Team is also focusing on Veun Sai-Siem Pang National Park, one of Cambodia’s last remaining pristine forests. Home to some of the last populations of giant ibis, sun bears and clouded leopards, Veun Sai-Siem Pang National Park is recognized as a Key Biodiversity Area. The forests of Veun Sai-Siem Pang National Park is also essential to local people, providing food, fuelwood, medicinal plants and fresh water. Veun Sai-Siem Pang also represents some of the most extensive ancestral lands for Indigenous communities within any protected area in the nation. These communities, whose spiritual beliefs are intimately attached to the forest, are among Cambodia’s most economically disadvantaged, poverty which has led to individuals participating in illegal and environmentally harmful activities as a means of survival to support their families.

Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing are key components for the operations of these conservation projects which rely on spatial analyses to support protected area management and the quantification of carbon emissions. This internship will provide the opportunity to engage and support the development of these tools and data products.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the development of machine-learning algorithms for land cover classification and assess the accuracy of land cover maps throughout priority sites in the Philippines, in partnership with SERVIR-Mekong Spatial Informatics Group (SIG), a geospatial data-for-development program that responds to the needs of Lower Mekong countries.
  • Land cover map validation, statistical sampling, and other digitization work in NCS Carbon Development Team project areas using cloud-based GIS tools like Collect Earth Online.
  • Support the Regional GIS coordinator with geospatial analysis and database management for projects in the Asia-Pacific Field Division.
