The Opportunity:

  • CACI is looking for an experienced Spacecraft Flight Software Systems Engineer to support design of the Lunar Gateway Vehicle Systems Manager (VSM) flight software. While former development experience is valued and will be drawn on, this position is focused on the system engineering process impacting design. No software development is involved.
  • VSM is an integrated system monitoring and autonomously managing Gateway space station modules and functions.  Lunar Gateway, a vital component of NASA’s Artemis Program, will serve as a multi-purpose outpost orbiting the Moon that provides essential support for long-term human return to the lunar surface, and serves as a staging point and technology incubator for deep space exploration.
  • This critical software system engineering role will contribute to VSM design and development with a focus on human interaction with VSM, and VSM’s interfaces and integration with the astronaut flight crew and Mission Control.
  • No code development will be involved.
  • This position requires a motivated, capable person with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • The individual must share our passion for our Nation's Space Program and share in the excitement of developing the next human-rated space vehicles. In addition to outstanding technical expertise, the individual must have strong customer relationship skills, possess a positive team-player attitude, be flexible and willing to take on new assignments and responsibilities as they arise, and be an articulate speaker able to communicate complex technical ideas in a convincing manner.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain program level Vehicle System Manager to Human Operator Interface Control Document (ICD) and Interface Requirements Document (IRD).
  • Mature VSM concepts and design related to human computer interaction (HCI) and capture them in project documentation.
  • Provide creative solutions to advance VSM Software HCI related technologies through design deep dives, brainstorming sessions and working groups.
  • Lead a Human Integration Working Group to obtain agreement from key stakeholders on design capabilities and how you intend to document in project documentation.
  • Interact with software development teams to infuse and confirm incorporation of HCI principles in Software implementation.
  • Provide solutions to previously identified system gaps and ensure robustness of the proposed solution.
  • Perform trade studies, analysis, and assessment of complex systems.
  • Use custom and commercial tools (DOORS, Sharepoint, Confluence, MagicDraw) to develop, update, edit and maintain proposed solutions for review.
  • Interface with NASA and spacecraft designer engineering and operations teams for the integration to properly occur.
  • Interface with domestic and international Gateway partners.
  • Actively participate and present to NASA board members and review cycles (PDR, CDR, SRR).
  • Provide input to influence overall capabilities related to the interaction and control of the system.
  • Provide support to the Lunar Gateway Mission Management Working Group (MMWG) and represent the VSM department in working groups that required the departments input, or knowledge of the system.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident to facilitate access to USG facilities.
  • B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Software, Computer, or Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or related disciplines.
  • At least three years of systems engineering experience including system capability design and development.
  • Experience with either: Avionics and flight software development for human-rated space vehicles, e.g., Space Shuttle, International Space Station, Commercial Crew Vehicles, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, or Lunar Gateway, or: Autonomous or remotely controlled systems (e.g., used in satellites, autonomous cars, or unmanned aerial vehicles).
  • Experience developing/maintaining project documentation such as ICDs, IRDs, IRDD, SRD, CONOPS.
  • Ability to present complex topics and defend proposed solutions to large audiences.
  • Evidence of success in fast-paced, collaborative projects/environments developing systems engineering documentation.
  • Flexible, open to new challenges in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with little supervision.
  • Responsible, team-oriented individual with strong work ethic.
  • Well-developed coordination and organization skills.

Desired:

  • Experience in the full life cycle of human-rated space vehicle flight software projects (e.g., Space Shuttle, International Space Station, Commercial Crew Vehicles, or Orion).
  • Experience with autonomous systems.
  • Experience with User Interface influence on software design for crewed or human-operated vehicles or systems.
  • SysML experience.
  • Experience or knowledge of database management.
  • Experience with data management for software systems.
  • Experience using MagicDraw and/or other Model Based Systems Engineering Tools.
  • Experience in integrating distributed avionics and software systems.
