State specific pay scales for this role are as follows:

$123,214 to $240,042 (CA, NJ, NY, WA, HI, AK, MD, CT, RI, MA)

$112,013 to $218,220 (NV, OR, AZ, CO, WY, TX, ND, MN, MO, IL, WI, FL, GA, MI, OH, VA, PA, DE, VT, NH, ME)

$100,811 to $196,398 (UT, ID, MT, NM, SD, NE, KS, OK, IA, AR, LA, MS, AL, TN, KY, IN, SC, NC, WV)

The expected base salary for this position will vary depending on a number of factors, including relevant experience, skills and location.

As a Principal Machine Learning Engineer, you will lead advanced machine learning initiatives and be responsible for driving ML platform scalability, adoption, and business transformation. You will serve as a tech lead and work closely with cross-functional teams of software engineers, data analysts, and product leaders. Additionally, you will lead and mentor junior data scientists, ensuring their growth and the implementation of best practices in machine learning and analytics.

You will play a pivotal role in understanding business needs, leading research efforts, and implementing solutions using data, statistical models, and machine learning techniques. You will collaborate with key business departments, such as Product, Underwriting, Claims, Sales, Marketing, and Customer Experience, to enhance decision-making, process efficiency, and accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the tech lead for advanced machine learning initiatives, driving company-wide adoption.
  • Lead platform development efforts to scale machine learning infrastructure and model deployment.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior data science team members on best practices, toolsets, and machine learning techniques.
  • Independently lead analytical projects that identify business opportunities, answer key business questions, and develop innovative solutions.
  • Partner with business teams to understand processes, identify areas for improvement, and lead the implementation of solutions using machine learning and automated processes.
  • Drive data support for projects and work closely with business and IT teams to implement solutions.
  • Lead research into new data sources and infrastructure, optimizing data retrieval methods and ensuring data accuracy.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve dashboards, reports, and automated procedures for efficient and accurate data analysis.
  • Conduct code reviews, provide technical feedback, and establish highly automated CI/CD pipelines from raw data to machine learning models.
  • Present findings and recommendations through clear, impactful presentations, including PowerPoint, visualizations, and data-driven reports.
  • Create and maintain monitoring procedures to track the performance of implemented models and processes, identifying areas for further optimization.

Qualifications

Education

Minimum:

  • Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, or related field

Preferred:

  • PhD is preferred

Experience

Minimum:

  • 10+ years of experience in machine learning engineering, with a proven track record of scaling ML platforms.
  • 6+ years as the engineering tech lead or similar capacity

Minimum:

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong engineering capabilities with experience in software development, systems architecture, and optimization.
  • Expertise in Kubernetes and other machine learning infrastructure (e.g., Docker, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • Experience in leading cross-functional teams and mentoring junior engineers or data scientists.
  • Expert knowledge of working with cloud-based advanced data and analytics environments, such as SageMaker, AnyScale, or similar.
  • Expertise in programming languages like Python
  • Experience in building and validating models, text mining, and working with large structured and unstructured data sources
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex problems and concepts.

Preferred:

  • Experience with insurance industry processes (e.g., P&C) and knowledge is strongly preferred.
