Lead Special Effects Technician
Full-Time Position
 
We are looking for a Lead Special Effects Technician to join our team! Under the guidance of the Technical Director of the show, as well as the Department Manager, The Lead Special Effects Technician is responsible for assisting the Head of Department (“HOD”) in leading the Special Effects team for responsibilities related to operating, installing and maintaining equipment in a safe and consistent manner, while providing all other supporting services. The ideal candidate should have a team player mindset and the ability to work well under pressure in situations that require critical thinking.
 
The Lead Special Effects Technician will:
-          Lead and manage a team of employees within the Special Effects department; Oversee all departmental rehearsals, trainings, show calls and maintenance in collaboration with Show HOD, Department Manager, Technical Director, Artistic staff and Stage Management teams;
-          At the discretion of the Show HOD, Technical Director and Department Manager, assist in managing and supervising certain administrative aspects of the department; Manage daily scheduling of department with Show HOD;
-          Support HOD in forecasting and budgeting for department; Work within the established budget to order and receive goods, ensuring equipment and supplies are stocked with a sufficient quantity to meet the on-going needs of the production;
-          Run department cue tracks, operate and troubleshoot lighting equipment, as directed for performances, artistic training and maintenance;
-          Develop the team’s knowledge of all department equipment specific to the production in order to operate and maintain equipment safely;
-          Set up and maintain a complex Special Effects system consisting of multiple computers, networks, consoles, atmospherics, pyrotechnics, lasers and other stage-related equipment; 
-          Coordinate, determine and oversee support for special projects, including the research, purchasing, construction and installation of new show elements, and other projects that include Special Effects/Atmospheric elements or other needs that may fall within the department’s specialty, as directed; Maintain flexible schedule for such projects;
-          Ensure all department documentation, preventative and reactive maintenance routines and any information related to the safety of the show’s run is current and formally recorded. Train teams on proper documentation practices;
-          Adhere to and promote all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations as they pertain to the safe operation of all elements related to the show; participate in all required health and safety classes and emergency rescue procedure training;
-          Contribute to a safe and positive working environment at all times by adhering to and following all Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group standards, values, policies and regulations pertaining to safety using equipment and established working methods;
-          Assist other departments when necessary for cross-departmental support;
-          Complete all other job-related duties as assigned.
 
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
-          At least three years of previous experience as a professional Special Effects Technician;
-          Previous field experience with repairs, troubleshooting and diagnostics with a wide variety of theatrical Special Effects and Lighting;
-          Strong knowledge of, and experience working with electronics, lasers, AC/DC electricity, pyrotechnics, LN2, flame and atmospherics;
-          Previous experience in production, effects system operation, maintenance and repair;
-          Previous experience with theatrical networking protocols, such as MIDI, DMX, Artnet, and sACN;
-          Working knowledge of Ethernet and wireless technology (TCIP/IP, UDP, Switches, Firewalls);
-          Ability to program and operate a variety of lighting consoles and pyrotechnic firing systems;
-          Ability to work while in a harness;
-          Must hold necessary licenses for regulatory compliance, such as: Nevada Pyro and Lasers;
-          Working knowledge of Microsoft Office;
-          Ability to obtain OSHA 30 course completion card;
-          High school diploma or GED completion;
-          Availability to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays; 
-          Fluent in English, both written and spoken;
-          Ability to perform essential functions of the position such as, but not limited to: working in an environment with limited to no visibility, working with effects like fog, smoke and fire, bending, crouching, climbing for extended periods of time, lifting 50lbs unassisted.
