Department

The Parks and Recreation Department’s mission is to create community through people, parks and programs. To achieve this mission, we provide year-round recreational programs, classes, sports leagues, summer camps and events for residents of Corte Madera and surrounding communities. Activities take place at the spacious Corte Madera Community Center and adjoining 20-acre Town Park, and at other Corte Madera locations. Offerings range from soccer leagues for Kindergarten-6th graders to softball leagues for adults, and from AARP Driver Safety to computer classes for adults 55 and over to an open gym. Events include Friday Family Movies, Egg Hunts, Family Dances, Pumpkin Carving, Gingerbread House Decorating, and Big Band Dance.

Position

Under supervision, the Recreation Aide - Child Care learns to supervise and engage children in grades K–5, promoting active play, learning, and creative activities in a safe and welcoming environment. This position is responsible for planning and implementing recreational, educational, and enrichment programs, maintaining attendance and program records, and communicating with parents and staff. 

This is an entry level classification that requires limited time on the job before an incumbent is capable of functioning at the full journey level. Initially, assignments are limited in scope and under more direct supervision. As experience accrues, the incumbent becomes able to independently perform the full range of duties associated with this level.

Position Duties

• Learns to supervise and engage children in grades K–5 during afterschool program hours, encouraging active play, reading, and creative activities. 
• Supports the planning and implementation of recreational, educational, and enrichment activities (e.g., arts, crafts, sports). 
• Ensures a safe and welcoming environment by enforcing program rules and encouraging positive behavior. 
• Checks children in and out of the program, maintaining accurate attendance records. 
• May communicate with parents, guardians, and coworkers about program activities and participant needs. 
• Assist with preparing snacks and maintaining program spaces, equipment, and supplies. 
• Provide basic first aid when necessary.
• Performs related duties as required.

• Basic practices and methods of instruction, care, and supervision of school-aged children.
• Basic recreation principles and group activity planning. 
• Standard office practices, recordkeeping, and computer applications (including recreation registration software). 
• Basic maintenance and cleaning practices.
• Recordkeeping principles and procedures.
• Correct English usage and basic arithmetic. 
• Town and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols including basic first aid and adult and/or child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) methods

• Learns to supervise and positively engage school-age children. 
• Create and maintain a safe learning environment.
• Think and act quickly and effectively in emergencies.
• Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. 
• Provide excellent customer service to participants, parents, staff, and community members. 
• Work collaboratively with a diverse team and community. 
• Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Exercise sound judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity to the needs of children. 
• Respond calmly and appropriately in emergencies. 
• Maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner.
• Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
• Perform basic mathematical calculations.

• Must be 16 years of age or older
• Must be able to obtain CPR/AED and First Aid certification within 30 days of appointment
• Successfully complete a pre-employment background check to include fingerprinting and Child Abuse Index check 
• Tuberculosis Clearance and satisfactory Health Screening
• Ability to work afternoons and evenings; Work schedule is typically: M, T, TH, F 1:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. and W 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:  

Experience: 

• Customer service experience is desirable.

• CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
