Position Summary:

The Graduate Assistant (GA) will provide support in enhancing procurement operations through the integration and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies.  This position will collaborate closely with the procurement team to streamline processes, optimize procurement activities, automate decision-making workflows, and implement intelligent analytics to forecast procurement needs and expenditures.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Use Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to develop and enhance automated procurement chatbots, facilitating efficient FAQ management and query resolution.
  • Design and implement decision-tree algorithms to recommend appropriate procurement forms and procedures, reducing processing time and minimizing errors.
  • Develop AI-driven data extraction solutions for structured and semi-structured procurement documentation using OCR (Optical Character Recognition), Named Entity Recognition (NER), and semantic analysis.
  • Employ predictive analytics and forecasting models to proactively manage inventory requirements, procurement timelines, and vendor selection processes.
  • Analyze procurement data using clustering algorithms and anomaly detection to identify potential cost-saving opportunities and mitigate risks.
  • Collaborate on integrating reinforcement learning methodologies for optimizing procurement decision-making processes and strategies based on historical transaction data.
  • Prepare technical documentation and reports detailing AI model performance, accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 scores, ensuring transparency, interpretability, and accountability in automated processes.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies and ethical standards regarding data governance, privacy protection, and AI fairness in procurement-related applications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


 Minimum Qualifications

  1. Currently enrolled as full-time graduate student in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related field at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. 
  2. Experience with procurement processes or financial systems.
  3. Familiarity with state-of-the-art AI explainability techniques (e.g. SHAP, LIME).
  4. Experience with AI-driven automation projects.
  5. Experience in NLP frameworks, including but not limited to spaCy, NLTK, or Hugging Face Transformers.
  6. Familiarity with cloud computing environments (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform) and related AI services.
  7. Experience in working with relational databases, SQL queries, and data warehousing solutions.


Desirable Qualifications

  1. Proficiency in Python, particularly with frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, and Scikit-learn.
  2. Experience with data extraction and processing tools such as Pandas, NumPy, and OpenCV.
