We are seeking an experienced Licensed Professional Surveyor (PS) to join our growing team in Ohio. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the growth of Lochmueller Group’s surveying presence in the region, supported by our established Survey & Right of Way Engineering team based in Indiana. Depending on the selected candidate’s skills and interests this role may present an opportunity to grow into a local survey leadership position as our regional presence expands. Preferred locations include the Columbus and Cleveland areas; however, we are open to considering qualified candidates in other parts of State.
As the Professional Surveyor, you will contribute to pursuing and leading survey and right-of-way engineering projects, supporting business development efforts, and collaborating with other disciplines across the firm. In the near term, while the surveying practice in the Columbus region grows, this position will also support survey projects in other markets. Key Responsibilities:
Survey Operations Development & Growth:
Contribute to the growth and professional surveying services within the regional market.
Support survey project pursuits, including proposals and project interviews.
Provide mentorship to junior staff.
Project Management:
Serve as project manager or lead surveyor for boundary, topographic, route, and construction surveying projects of varying size and complexity.
Develop project goals, scopes of work, schedules, and budgets.
Coordinate and manage survey crews and project team members.
Attend and participate in client and public official meetings.
Communicate project progress, findings, and deliverables to clients and stakeholders.
Technical Delivery:
Plan, coordinate, and oversee field activities, with limited participation as needed, for boundary, route, topographic, construction staking, and control surveys.
Provide technical guidance on complex survey calculations, methodologies, and issues.
Conduct pre‑mission planning for GPS surveys and oversee data processing and adjustments.
Perform QA/QC on survey data, documentation, and final deliverables.
Ensure proper survey techniques, equipment usage, and adherence to quality standards.
Collaborate with other disciplines across the firm to support integrated project delivery.
Survey Analysis & Documentation:
Research deeds, plats, survey records, and public documents.
Analyze property lines and boundaries and prepare boundary descriptions and Surveyor’s Reports.
Prepare survey data for CAD handoff or complete CAD drawings and plats.
Maintain organized project files and documentation.
Qualifications for this role:
Bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, or another approved degree with an equivalent combination of education and experience
Licensed Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) in Ohio
Significant experience leading surveying projects with increasing responsibility
Experience developing ODOT right of way plans
Demonstrated client and business development capabilities
Strong technical background in boundary, topographic, route, and construction surveys
Interest in growing a practice, building client relationships, and developing business opportunities
Proven leadership, communication, and mentoring skills
Proficiency with surveying technologies, data processing, and CAD platforms (e.g., AutoCAD Civil 3D, OpenRoads, or similar)
Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel to project sites as needed
Additional qualifications that are helpful:
Experience establishing or expanding surveying services in a new or developing market
Prior experience managing or mentoring survey teams
Experience supporting proposal development and project pursuits
Familiarity with GIS applications and geospatial data management
Experience coordinating with public agencies, utility providers, and regulatory entities
Strong understanding of applicable federal, state, and local surveying laws and regulations
