Akicita Federal is hiring Nurse Practitioners to deliver direct primary care services to veterans through the Dayton VA Medical Center in Dayton, OH. In this role, you will spend the vast majority of your time in face-to-face patient care — managing clinic appointments, reviewing lab and imaging results, and conducting phone consultations — while making a meaningful difference in the lives of those who served. A small portion of your time supports quality improvement activities and interdisciplinary team collaboration.
- Evaluate, diagnose, and treat veteran patients in a primary care setting, meeting or exceeding standards established by The Joint Commission.
- Order and interpret diagnostic studies including laboratory panels, imaging, and electrocardiograms to guide clinical decision-making.
- Manage patient medications in accordance with established facility protocols, ensuring safe and appropriate prescribing practices.
- Coordinate care with sub-specialists and arrange follow-up after patient discharge to ensure continuity of treatment.
- Counsel patients on advanced care planning and facilitate discussions around end-of-life preferences.
- Identify veterans in need of social services — including those experiencing homelessness or without an established primary care provider — and initiate appropriate referrals.
- Complete clinical documentation and accurate Evaluation and Management (E&M) coding in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) at the close of each shift, and communicate test results to patients and providers in compliance with VHA Directive 1088.
- Board Certified or Board Eligible as a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner with credentials sufficient for the granting of clinical privileges.
- Current, full, and unrestricted NP license to practice in accordance with VA requirements.
- Active certifications in BLS and ACLS (VHA-approved or facility-approved equivalencies).
- Continuing medical education (CME) hours current and reportable to a credentials office.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English fluently with strong communication skills.
- Ability to satisfy VA healthcare worker health requirements, including annual influenza vaccination and occupational bloodborne pathogen training.
- Ability to clear required VA background checks prior to beginning work.
What sets candidates apart:
- Prior experience providing primary care in a VA or other federal healthcare setting.
- Familiarity with VA electronic health record systems and E&M coding practices.
- Experience working within a Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) or similar interdisciplinary care model.
- Comfort performing baseline procedures such as fecal occult blood testing and abscess incision and drainage.
- Experience with patient safety reporting systems and quality improvement or CQI activities.
