ABOUT BUILDING BRIDGES ACROSS THE RIVER (buildingbridgesdc.org)

Building Bridges Across the River (Building Bridges) provides residents east of the Anacostia River access to the best-in-class facilities, programs and partnerships in arts and culture, economic opportunity, education, recreation, health and well-being. Building Bridges Across the River (Building Bridges) works to build intergenerational wealth, improve the social determinants of health and amplify the stories, history and culture of the Ward 8 community. Building Bridges develops and manages facilities and programs in Wards 7 and 8 including the Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC), THEARC Farm, THEARC Theater, 11th Street Bridge Park, Skyland Workforce Center and Building Bridges Farms. In 2005, Building Bridges' first facility was THEARC at 110,000 square feet and since then, has grown to 236,000 square feet, representing the largest social service, multisector, nonprofit collaboration in the country.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Manager of Institutional Giving serves the institutional development needs of Building Bridges Across the River. This position works within the Development team to secure funds that support the organization’s Theory of Change: to reduce structural barriers to social and economic mobility to build a more equitable city. This position writes grant proposals to foundations, corporations, and government (local and federal), completes grant reports and deliverables as well as seeking new funding opportunities, ensuring annual fundraising goals are met. The Manager of Institutional Giving works closely with the Development, Program and Senior Leadership teams.

Grant Writing & Reporting

  • Work with members of the Development team to write compelling grant and sponsorship proposals, renewals, reports, and letters of inquiry for programming and general operating expenses.
  • Monitor all federal grant-supported contracts for regulation and compliance during lifecycle of the grant. This includes leading the coordination of all federal award reporting per contract on a quarterly and annual basis.
  • Manage grant tracking mechanisms to ensure timely submissions, compliance, and reporting.
  • Meet regularly with program staff and finance staff to develop budgets.
  • Track progress against fundraising goals/deadlines.
  • Research and pursue new funding prospects.
  • Monitor grant-supported projects for compliance with regulations and adherence to requirements. Communicate potential problems and risks to relevant staff and as needed, recommend and/or assist in implementing corrective actions.
  • Partner with the Finance team to develop and review grant application budgets, monitor activities, submit financial reports, and support other grant-related financial activities.

 

Prospecting & Research

  • Manage funding database and prospecting lists.
  • Research potential institutional prospects to determine alignment with Building Bridges’ mission.
  • Work with executive leadership to maintain relationships with donors to communicate progress of programs and explore funding opportunities.
  • Represent Building Bridges externally to individual, institutional, and governmental partners to strengthen relationships and secure resources.
  • Manage cultivation events including invitations, RSVPs, and program logistics.

 

Additional Duties & Responsibilities

  • Represent Building Bridges through participation in community outreach and speak knowledgeably about our programs
  • Clearly communicate the mission, goals, and activities of Building Bridges Across the River to potential and current participants, supporters, and allies

Requirements

  • Passionate about the mission of Building Bridges and uplifting under-resourced communities. Knowledge of East of the River communities is preferred.  
  • Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of direct fundraising experience in the nonprofit sector with corporate, foundation, and government supporters preferred.  
  • Able to compellingly articulate the mission, programs and stories of Building Bridges in writing and in person.  
  • Self-motivated, team-player with exceptional customer service orientation.  
  • Excellent written (including editing and proofreading) and verbal communication skills, including the ability to understand and translate Building Bridges mission to different audiences.  
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills, as well as have excellent multitasking abilities to participate in a variety of projects.  
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in the use of software (Windows OS, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and donor databases such as Donor Perfect) and the ability to use or learn technology used at Building Bridges, including the Instrumental research platform and WordPress web management.  
  • Intellectually curious, creative, and strategic thinker. Able to think out of the box, challenge conventional norms, and try new approaches.  
  • Has a high level of emotional intelligence, cultural sensitivity, and interpersonal skills.  
  • Sound judgment and integrity with discretion in handling and securing confidential information, as well as the ability to conduct oneself in a highly professional manner.  

Benefits

This is a full-time position with a salary of $60,000-$75,000 with benefits including PTO, Holiday Pay, Medical, Dental, Vision and ability to participate in the 401(K) Plan. Building Bridges is an equal opportunity employer.
