Lead Medical Innovation and Evidence-Based Care in Addiction Recovery

At State of the Heart Recovery, the Medical Director serves as the senior medical leader guiding clinical excellence across mental health and substance use treatment programs. This role oversees medical and clinical aspects of care, including Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), ensuring services are delivered safely, ethically, and in accordance with evidence-based standards.

The Medical Director works collaboratively with clinical leadership, nursing teams, and operational leadership to develop treatment protocols, guide quality improvement initiatives, and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements. This position plays a critical role in shaping the organization’s clinical strategy while supporting interdisciplinary teams dedicated to improving outcomes for individuals in recovery.

What You Will Do

• Provide medical leadership and oversight for mental health and substance use treatment programs, including Medication-Assisted Treatment services.
• Ensure clinical care aligns with best practices, regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards.
• Develop, review, and implement clinical protocols, policies, and treatment procedures.
• Provide direct clinical care including client evaluations, diagnoses, treatment planning, and medication management.
• Oversee MAT services, including prescribing and monitoring medications such as buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone.
• Collaborate with counseling, nursing, and clinical staff to develop individualized treatment plans.
• Monitor clinical outcomes and performance data to support quality improvement initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with DEA requirements, state regulations, and federal healthcare standards.
• Lead interdisciplinary case consultations and clinical team meetings.
• Mentor physicians, nurse practitioners, counselors, and other clinical staff.
• Build collaborative relationships with hospitals, emergency departments, and community healthcare providers.
• Serve as a liaison with regulatory agencies and community partners.
• Identify opportunities to expand programs and integrate medical, clinical, and recovery services.
• Support grant initiatives and program development efforts that strengthen clinical services.

Requirements

What You Will Bring

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) required.
• Active medical license in the State of New Mexico.
• DEA waiver or eligibility to prescribe Medication-Assisted Treatment medications such as buprenorphine.
• Current CPR or BLS certification.
• Five to seven years of clinical experience with a focus on mental health and substance use treatment.
• Experience providing Medication-Assisted Treatment for opioid use disorders.
• Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
• Board certification in Psychiatry, Addiction Medicine, or related specialty preferred.
• Strong knowledge of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
• Proficiency in Electronic Health Records and clinical documentation systems.
• Strong leadership, collaboration, and communication skills.
