Purpose of the Role:

  • Manage, lead and direct the duty control managers, controllers and TOPS clerks, ensuring that safe and effective decisions are made to protect company interests;
  • Represent Freightliner in industry meetings and exercises as necessary to enhance the reputation and protect the interests of the business
  • Be responsible for the evidence-based data to support the Control Competence Management System and issuing of certificate of competencies for each role within the control function.

Key job requirements:

  • Excellent knowledge in Rail Control Management and in national rail geography
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation and terms and conditions relating to the utilisation of operational staff;
  • A good knowledge of freight train operations with a sound knowledge of railway geography;
  • Post holder must be extremely well organised and self-motivated;
  • Good communication skills;
  • A good knowledge of driver and groundstaff conditions of service;
  • Commercially astute, articulate, technically strong, dynamic, insightful and influential leader with the ability to operate at both a strategic and an operational level;
  • Ability to build healthy working relationships with business stakeholders while exhibiting independence and objectivity in thought and action;
  • Solid analytical skills with the ability to digest and disseminate information on a broad range of businesses and stakeholders;
  • Ability to multitask and work well under pressure, prioritising tasks and workload and managing conflicting demands;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff across the Freightliner Group, as well as key stakeholders, most particularly the UK Senior management team and the recognised Unions;
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal;
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to plan own work, work autonomously and on own initiative, and meet deadlines;
  • Excellent attention to detail with a high level of accuracy of work; Appreciation of the demands of managing conflicting interests and of meeting statutory requirements;
  • Ability to navigate complex problems and ensure effective and sound decision making, systematically and under pressure;
  • Effective management and delegation with the ability to build trust and motivate a team.
