About the Department

Are you ready to put your skills behind the wheel of powerful, specialized equipment to keep our city running smoothly? The City of Hampton is looking for a dedicated individual to work as an Equipment Operator IV in our Public Works/Wastewater division.  In this position you will operate a variety of complex heavy-duty motorized and automotive machinery used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City’s public works infrastructure.  This role is an essential part of the crews that build, maintain, and improve the systems our community relies on every day. Working under close supervision and established procedures, you’ll gain hands-on experience with equipment that keeps our streets, facilities, and utilities in top shape.  If you’re dependable, safety-focused, and eager to contribute to meaningful work that strengthens our city, we’d love to have you on our team!

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or successful completion of GED.
  • Three (3) years of full-time equivalent experience in equipment operation or closely related experience. 
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position
  • This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy; will be subject to random testing while an incumbent in this position.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
  • Must possess a State of Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or a valid driver’s license and obtain a State of Virginia CDL Class A within 180 days of employment.
  • Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

Additional Requirements

  • The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
