The Custodial Tech Lead serves as a working lead custodial staff member by providing professional custodial duties in a fast-paced housing program designed to accommodate approximately 3,700 resident-students. Housing and Residence Life’s mission and goal is to assure healthy, safe, clean and comfortable environments in the university residence halls. 

 

The Custodial Tech Lead position reports to the Housing Facilities General Custodial Tech Supervisor and assists with the on-boarding, detailed training, reviews the work of custodial staff and provides corrective actions.  Keeps supervisor abreast on an on-going basis, by providing frequent updates and making recommendations for improvement. Reports problems, incidents, damages and building repair needs. 

Responsibilities

 

  • Performs routine custodial tasks such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, vacuuming, extracting, blowing, removing trash, cleaning stairs, washing walls and baseboards, cleaning windows and window coverings, cleaning and polishing mirrors, removing spiderwebs, cleaning up spills, appliances and furniture 
  • Moves sofas, chairs, tables, desks, mattresses, appliances and beds to accomplish cleaning tasks 
  • Safely operates all vehicles and other job-related equipment.  Shampoos carpets and upholstery in suites, apartments, hallways, lobbies, community spaces, study rooms, kitchenettes/kitchens, and offices within residential halls 
  • Cleans bathroom showers, tubs, stalls, toilets, glass, mirrors, sinks, vent covers, and walls using provided chemicals, materials and equipment; restocks restrooms with all necessary materials and products
  • Reports problems, incidents, damages or building repairs needed and as directed by supervisors
  • Properly handles and disposes of recycling materials and follows instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies
  • Provides quality customer service to residents and staff
  • Ensures rooms are set up for special events and restore rooms to prior conditions afterwards
  • Assists the General Custodial Supervisor in monitoring supply inventory levels 
  • Assess supply needs and ensure timely distribution of cleaning materials and equipment to custodial staff
  • Supports staff training by helping onboard new custodians, demonstrating proper cleaning techniques, and reinforcing safety protocols
  • Reports facility maintenance needs or safety concerns to the General Custodial Supervisor and help coordinate appropriate response
  • Aids in the coordination, scheduling, and leadership of summer custodial projects and staffing plans
  • Serves as a point of contact for custodial staff in the supervisor’s absence, helping to resolve minor issues and ensure workflow continuity
  • Acts as a role model for the custodial team by demonstrating professionalism and adhering to University of Tennessee policies, departmental procedures, and expectations
  • May be called upon to respond to emergencies during weekends, holidays or outside of regular working hours
  • Performs additional duties as assigned to support the goals and objectives of Housing & Residential Life and the University

  • Demonstrated skills in the operation of carpet cleaning and floor cleaning equipment such as buffers, extractors, scrubbers, and power washers
  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of housekeeping chemicals and equipment
  • Willingness to learn and grow, with the ability to receive and apply constructive feedback

Qualifications

Minimum: Requires a high school diploma or GED, 6 months of custodial experience in a commercial or institutional setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

 

Preferred: 2+ years of custodial experience in a commercial or institutional setting is preferred.
