Position:  Courthouse Security Officer
Department:  Sheriff's Office
Job Type:  Part-time, up to 29 hours per week
Work Schedule:  Typically works 8-hour day shifts, Monday - Friday, 1-2 shifts per week - OCCASSIONAL ON-CALL
Work Setting:  On site and requires regular, in-person attendance
FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt
Union: LELS Local 209 Non-Licensed

Compensation

2025

  • Expected 2025 Hiring Range: $24.64 - $26.27 per hour ($51,521.20 - $54,641.60 annually), depending on qualifications, relevant experience, and internal equity.
  • Full Range: $24.64 – $31.82 per hour ($51,521.20 – $66,185.60 annually), with the potential for additional longevity-based pay.
2026
  • Expected 2026 Hiring Range: $25.50 - $27.19 per hour ($53,040.00 - $56,555.20 annually), depending on qualifications, relevant experience, and internal equity.
  • Full Range: $25.50 – $32.93 per hour ($53,040.00 – $68,494.40 annually), with the potential for additional longevity-based pay.

General Definition of Work

Performs work ensuring security and protection of court officers, county employees, witnesses, and civilians, including and corrections facilities, courtrooms, and government center, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Jail Administrator.

Essential Functions

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable an individual with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Provides government center and courtroom security.
  • Operates metal detector and scanner at main entrance of government center building.
  • Transports inmates to/from prison and county jails, dentist, doctor, etc.
  • Assists bailiffs in courtroom duties as needed.
  • Controls juror movements during jury trials.
  • Transports mentally ill individuals to/from treatment centers and hospitals.
  • Escorts inmates from jail to courtrooms.
  • Provides security for special events (e.g., shot clinics, county fair, etc.).
  • Guards and escorts inmates at hospitals, clinics, and other appointments.
  • Opens and closes courtrooms and government center. Checks for security and cleanliness.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED and moderate experience in law enforcement operations and public relations or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must be certified, or ability to obtain certification, in CPR and basic life saving techniques and First Aid.
  • Must be taser certified.
  • Pass a criminal history background investigation.

Special Qualifications

  • Must meet and maintain all training and education requirements for position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of law enforcement principles and procedures.
  • Skill in operation of county owned vehicles, equipment, computers, copiers, and fax machines.
  • Skill in use of TASER and defensive tactics (TASER certification required).
  • Skill in using judgment, discretion and decision-making skills in appropriately handling and resolving conflicts, security concerns, emergencies, disruptions or disorders in the courtroom, government center and other county buildings.
  • Ability to react effectively and deal tactfully with persons in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition.
  • Ability to learn, apply, and implement courtroom and government center security procedures.
  • Ability to identify objects, actions, events, materials or surroundings that may involve security risks.
  • Ability to determine and appropriately apply use of force in accordance with office policies and learned procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, law enforcement and other agency personnel, departments, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain a regular and timely work attendance.

Working Conditions

Physical Requirements and Activity

This work requires the occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires standing, walking and repetitive motions, and occasionally requires sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling.

Sensory Requirements

Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.

Sensory Utilization

Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.

Environmental Conditions

Work is subject to blood-borne pathogens; work is generally in a quiet to moderately noisy location (e.g. library, common areas, courtroom, light traffic).

Successful interview candidates will then be contacted to schedule a background investigation which is conducted by Isanti County Sheriff's Office.  The background process may take up to three (3) months to complete.  Selections to move forward in the process will be made upon completion and review of background investigation results.
