About the Department
Lake County Public Works is a sewer and water provider to 40% of Lake County residents and owns, operates, and maintains more than 750 miles of pipe, three water reclamation facilities, more than 100 pump stations, an excess flow facility and a 1-mile-long levee. This Public Works position is to maintain and operate water and sanitary sewer plants.
This position works Monday through Friday from 7:00am – 3:30pm and must be available for occasional overtime duty, weekend duty and 24-hour call on a rotating basis.
Position Duties
- Ensure wastewater effluent meets limitations of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit.
- Ensure water quality meets IEPA standards and enter required report data.
- Establish performance standards and provide general technical assistance to operators of the water/wastewater facilities.
- Document facility performance and routinely file reports with Manager of Operations and Director of Public Works.
- Supervise the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment facilities.
- Supervise, assign daily duties, direct staff, and be available for after-hours work.
- Prepare and submit yearly operational budgets, recommend purchase of necessary supplies and equipment.
- Review and submit monthly operational reports.
- Must be available for weekends, emergency callouts, and participate in on-call rotation.
- All other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Good knowledge of methods, practices, materials, tools and knowledge of hazards and safety precautions involved in the operation and maintenance of public water supplies and/or water reclamation facilities.
Education and/or Other Requirements:
- Associate’s degree or the equivalent of two years of college or vocational school education.
- Possession of a Class 1 Wastewater Operator’s Certificate and a Class B Potable Water Operator's Certificate issued by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
- Possession of a valid Illinois Driver’s License, supplemented by a satisfactory driving record.
- Five years of related experience with at least three years progressively responsible experience in the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater systems, or operation of public water supplies, sanitary sewer systems and/or water reclamation facilities, some of which should have included supervisory experience.
- Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater facilities and of local, state, and federal rules, regulations and standards governing the operator of water/wastewater facilities.
- Good knowledge in operating hand power tools, valves and lubricate equipment.
- Requires at least one year of management experience with a small group.
Physical Requirements:
- Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, and digging
- Pushing and raising objects also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
Other Qualifications
