About the Department

The Director, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) position is a full-time, 12-month professional position. This position is responsible for assisting the Academic Dean, Sciences and Nursing with operational oversight of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Applied Technology Diploma, and Paramedic College Credit Certificate, as well as the AS in Emergency Medical Services Degree in the Division of Nursing, Arts, Sciences, and Hospitality. The position requires a wide variety of experience, skills and knowledge of higher education. This position maintains a 37.5-hour week and reports directly to the Academic Dean, Nursing, Arts, Sciences, and Hospitality

Position Duties

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Directs and oversees all aspects of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) programs, including EMT, Paramedic, and related AS degree programs, ensuring alignment with Florida Administrative Code, Department of Health regulations, and national accreditation standards.
  2. Leads the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of EMS curricula to meet state and national accreditation requirements. Ensures compliance with Florida Department of Health program review processes and maintains programmatic accreditation.
  3. Develops and manages departmental budgets, monitors expenditures, and optimizes resource allocation. Oversees procurement and maintenance of instructional equipment, technology, and supplies for EMS program.
  4. Prepare recommendations for hiring new adjuncts each term, as well as contractors and volunteers. 
  5. Ensures faculty credentials meet state and institutional requirements. 
  6. Plans and coordinates course schedules for EMT, Paramedic, and AS programs to maximize enrollment and student success. Monitors enrollment trends and adjust offerings to meet workforce demands.
  7. Instructs EMS courses as needed to support program delivery and maintain instructional continuity, ensuring compliance with credentialing requirements.
  8. Prepare and submit annual program assessments, unit plans, and accreditation reports. Implements quality assurance measures, including student learning outcomes assessment and program review.
  9. Builds and maintains partnerships with local EMS agencies, hospitals, and community organizations. Serves as the primary liaison for advisory committees and workforce development initiatives.
  10. Supports student advising and retention efforts in collaboration with academic advisors. Ensures students meet program requirements and assists with career placement strategies.
  11. Develops and enforces departmental policies and procedures consistent with college standards and Florida Administrative Code. Ensures adherence to safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
  12. Collaborates with college marketing and enrollment teams to promote EMS programs. Participates in recruitment events and outreach activities to attract prospective students.
  13. Identifies and pursues grant opportunities to support program growth and innovation. Oversees grant-funded projects and ensures compliance with reporting requirements.
  14. Ensures EMS labs are properly equipped, maintained, and compliant with safety standards. Establishes usage guidelines and monitors adherence.
  15. Serves on college committees, participates in strategic planning initiatives, and contributes to institutional accreditation efforts.
  16. Maintains current knowledge of EMS education trends, regulatory changes, and best practices. Represents the college at state and national EMS conferences and professional organizations.
  17. Required to attend Fall and Spring Graduation/Commencement ceremonies.
  18. Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field, Master’s preferred.
  • Clinical experience of 4 years minimum with a prehospital Advanced Life Supportprovider required.
  • Teaching experience of 2 years minimum as a level B EMS instructor required.
  • Experience with a Learning Management Systems preferred. 

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:

  • Certified as a Florida paramedic, in good standing with the department, with at least four years field level provider experience in the prehospital environment with an Advanced Life Support (ALS) provider.
  • Must have successfully completed Levels A and B coursework listed in Table I and Table II as identified in the National Guidelines for Educating EMS Instructors, August, 2002 edition, which is incorporated by reference and available from the department, as defined by subsection 64J-1.001(9), F.A.C., or at http://www.nhtsa.gov; or has qualified for one of the exemptions in subsection 64J-1.0201(5), F.A.C.

Physical Skills:

  • Ability to be mobile and to present lectures and demonstrations. Participate in lab and clinical experiences as necessary.
  • Lifting, pulling and pushing up to 50 lbs.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Works inside in an office environment, ambulance, hospital or clinical setting and outside as required.
