About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior API Engineer to join our Engineering Operations team in a senior engineer role. This role focuses on establishing and enabling best practices for API design, development, and management across the organization. The ideal candidate will combine hands-on technical expertise with a passion for engineering standards, automation, and developer enablement to drive a consistent and secure API ecosystem. Experience of APIM platform migration will be an added advantage.

What You'll Do

·        API Design & Development

  • Define and enforce enterprise-wide standards for RESTful, GraphQL, and event-driven APIs.

  • Develop reusable templates, proxies, and shared policies for API gateways (Apigee, Layer7).

  • Collaborate with domain teams to review API specifications (OpenAPI/Swagger) and ensure alignment with design guidelines.

  • API Platform Engineering

  • Build and manage API management platforms and developer portals.

  • Automate API lifecycle processes — onboarding, deployment, versioning, and retirement.

  • Integrate CI/CD pipelines for API testing, deployment, and analytics.

  • Optimize API performance through caching, quota management, and load control.

  • Security & Governance

  • Implement and enforce API security standards (OAuth2.0, OIDC, JWT, mTLS).

  • Work with Identity & Access Management (IAM) teams to federate APIs with enterprise IdPs (e.g., Keycloak, Okta, Azure AD).

  • Establish governance frameworks for API cataloging, discovery, versioning, and deprecation.

  • Promote adoption of the organization’s API style guide and review process.

  • Engineering Excellence & Enablement

  • Create reference architectures, documentation, and code samples to accelerate API delivery.

  • Drive internal API community initiatives — training, workshops, and reusable assets.

  • Implement observability and analytics dashboards to measure API adoption, quality, and performance.

  • Partner with platform, DevOps, and security teams to ensure alignment with cloud and engineering standards.

What You’ll Need

  • 4–8 years of experience in API development or management roles.

  • Strong proficiency in REST API design and OpenAPI specifications.

  • Hands-on experience with Apigee and Layer7 API Management Platforms.

  • Working knowledge of OAuth2.0, JWT, mTLS, and API security best practices.

  • Proficiency in either Java, Node.js, JavaScript or Python for building and integrating microservices.

  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).

  • Understanding of cloud platforms (Google Cloud and AWS).

Bonus Points

  • Experience defining API governance frameworks or establishing API CoE standards.

  • Exposure to event-driven or asynchronous APIs (Kafka, Async API).

  • Knowledge of API analytics and observability tools (Apigee Analytics, Coralogix, Grafana).

  • Strong communication skills for cross-team collaboration and technical documentation.

  • Experience mentoring teams in API-first and microservices design principles.
