Job Description Summary

The Medical Assistant will perform clinical and administrative duties under the direction of qualified personnel. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, performing point of service laboratory testing, and administering medications as directed by a qualified provider.

Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, checking in clients, and other administration tasks, including performing clinic cashier functions.

An ideal candidate for this position is a highly organized and compassionate bilingual Medical Assistant with a strong foundation in both clinical and administrative healthcare procedures. They are skilled in collecting medical histories, performing routine laboratory tests, administering medications, and assisting with examinations while maintaining strict adherence to safety and confidentiality protocols. Above all, they demonstrate exceptional communication and customer service skills, supporting public health initiatives with professionalism and a strong sense of community care.

Job Description

Clinical Support - 90%

  • Prepare exam rooms for client examinations, assuring adequate supplies & appropriate equipment is available. Escort clients to examination rooms and prepare them for examination.

  • Interview clients to collect a medical history, measure vital signs, assure proper paperwork is signed, perform laboratory testing, and document findings in the electronic medical record (EMR). Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or provider's instructions to patients.

  • Assist providers with specialty clinics and routine clinical procedures as needed. Help providers examine and treat clients, handing them instruments or materials or performing such tasks as giving injections or changing dressings on wounds. Perform all relevant scheduling and follow- up for client following examinations and procedures.

  • Complete required training for and perform Health Coaching in person or over the phone, ensuring certification is maintained.

  • Collect, blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens; log & label the specimens and prepare them for testing.

  • Set-up laboratory equipment, perform simple (CLIA waived) lab tests and perform quality assurance on equipment as needed. Clean and sterilize instruments/equipment and dispose of contaminated supplies; arrange clinical areas as needed.

  • After appropriate training and under supervision, may perform routine duties such as: injections, adult vaccinations, venipuncture, capillary collection, specimen preparation, as well as dispensing contraceptives and educating about their use, per existing prescriptions and local policy.

  • Maintain familiarity with immunization schedules, family planning birth control methods, tuberculosis treatment and communicable diseases. Understand VFC requirements and guidelines.

  • Assist with outreach clinics and events as requested, promoting health department programs and services.


Administrative Support - 10%

  • Schedule and confirm patient appointments. Assist providers and clients with referrals to outside providers and agencies. Interview patients to complete intake documents, histories or forms such as patient demographics, financial screening and/or insurance verifications.

  • Assist patients, providers and third-parties with processing medical releases and records.

  • Order supplies for clinic; prepare purchase orders, track, order and inventory all medical, lab, office, and pharmaceutical supplies & equipment.

  • Assist with data input for State and agency reports. Process program paperwork and enter data into corresponding software applications. May assist with coordinating meetings, community events, or home visits and preparation of relevant paperwork.

  • Verify charges for services or products received, collect deposits or payments, and arrange for customer billing. Receive payment by cash, check, credit cards, or vouchers. Enter customers' transactions into computers to record transactions and issue computer-generated receipts, refunds, or change due to customers. Balance currency, coin, and checks in cash drawers at ends of shifts, and calculate daily transactions using computers, calculators, or adding machines. Reconcile daily summaries of transactions to balance books. Keep accurate records of monetary exchanges, various transaction forms, and transaction reconciliations.

  • Compose a variety of confidential and complex correspondence and documents utilizing technical terminology and composition skills requiring accuracy and completeness. Proofread data and other information, such as memos, records or reports.

  • Operate office machines such as photocopiers and scanners, 10-key calculators, typewriters, facsimile machines, voice mail systems, and personal computers.

  • Maintain current licenses and certifications. Keep up-to-date technically and apply new knowledge to the job. Complete position-specific training for public health emergency response activities. Acquire and retain knowledge of policies, procedures, and various local, State and Federal regulations related to Health Department programs.

  • Maintain sensitive and confidential records information. Follow the Weld County Code of Conduct and adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines, including HIPAA, program-specific guidelines and the appropriate non-disclosure and/or release of information. Record proper documentation of client care, condition, progress, and problems; involve supervisor when appropriate.

  • Work the scheduled hours each day/week established for this position and be available as needed outside of regularly scheduled work hours or Health Department operating hours to attend and assist with night meetings, communication events, community outreach events and assist with response to public health emergencies.

  • Enter data into several different computer programs; learn and apply new computer skills on a regular basis; have a strong working knowledge of computer programs used on a daily basis such as electronic health records, program specific software applications, Microsoft Windows, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and OneDrive, database user interface and query software (client databases), and web browser software.

  • Maintain professional conduct and adhere to the Public Health Code of Ethics. Use exceptional customer service skills to respond to community needs, enhance public relations, coordinate activities, and represent the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment in order to promote and maintain a positive public health image and foster pride and professionalism in the workplace and community.

  • Comply with Federal, State, and local regulations and employer policies and procedures.

  • Conduct activities within the financial and operational plan of the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment.

  • Commute and work from all Health Department locations including the Greeley and Southwest Weld offices and/or other office/clinic locations as needed.

Required Qualifications

Required Education

  • High School Diploma/GED


Preferred Experience

  • 2 years experience working in a clinical health care setting.


Skills and Abilities

  • Bilingual in Spanish strongly preferred.

  • Experience with electronic medical record (EMR) strongly preferred.

  • Must have the ability to be reached (such as on a cell phone) and work outside of normal business hours as necessary, especially during emergencies and as needed by the Health Department Executive Director or Division Directors.

  • Candidate must pass a criminal background check.


Licenses and Certifications

  • Medical Assistant Certificate Required

  • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State Have and maintain a valid Colorado driver's license and use of personal, insured vehicle is required to perform job duties. Dependable transportation and auto insurance, maintained at all times, as required by State law, is required.


This position is non-exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore eligible for overtime pay.
