Under basic supervision of a company officer, acting company officer, or higher-ranking officer, functions as a team member during response to emergency incidents; performs skilled work in emergency response, fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, and fire education and prevention; participates in response to emergency situations and incidents including emergency mitigation and patient care.

Position Duties

  • Responds to emergency alarms and calls for service, and performs fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical duties as required to control emergency incidents; relays orders, instructions and information on emergency actions, and follows orders under stressful conditions.
  • Performs assigned duties within scope of authority and training, and according to Department policies and procedures; duties may vary according to job assignment and skill level.
  • Establishes safe medical treatment area for the assessment, treatment, stabilization, and transportation of patients according to Department medical protocol and level of emergency medical certification.
  • Participates in classes, drills, and training to maintain and upgrade current physical fitness, firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical skills; maintains Department records and work logs.
  • Inspects, cleans, and maintains personal protective equipment, and verifies that all emergency response equipment is in a proper state of readiness and available for immediate use.
  • Inspects and maintains Department facilities, vehicles, equipment, apparatus, tools, medical inventory, hydrants, and infrastructure; inspects, tests, evaluates, and repairs equipment after use; performs minor repairs on apparatus, equipment and facilities; notifies supervisors of maintenance problems beyond the scope of authority or skills.
  • Maintains fire station living quarters and grounds in clean and orderly condition.
  • Provides fire safety and prevention training to schools and to other community groups.
  • Continuously updates knowledge of City geography, traffic patterns, streets, landmarks, building locations, and special hazards of designated facilities.
  • Fills the roll of Fire Equipment Operator when assigned.
  • Attends training programs to continuously update work skills and knowledge.
  • May be asked to perform additional job duties that are directly, indirectly or completely unrelated to normal job functions in the course of presenting certain Town special events.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Must possess minimum of thirty (30) credit hours from an accredited college or university; OR
  • Credit hour requirement will be waived if the Firefighter has two (2) years of full-time, paid, Firefighter/Paramedic experience.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be certified or licensed Paramedic with the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS).
  • Basic Firefighter certification from Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) required. 
  • Aircraft Rescue training will be required, when scheduled, as condition of continued employment (unless previously certified). 
  • Safe driving record and valid Class ‘B’ Texas Driver’s License. 
  • Clear Criminal Background check and pre-employment drug screen.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of methods of firefighting, fire prevention, emergency medical practices, and arson investigation. 
  • Knowledge of applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of leadership and personnel management practices. 
  • Knowledge of problem-solving methods. 
  • Knowledge of work safety practices, procedures, ad protocols. 
  • Skill in using modern fire suppression principles to analyze and resolve operational and technical issues.
  • Skill in anticipating problems and efficiently implementing solutions. 
  • Skill in following concise instructions in emergency situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Other Qualifications

PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed outdoors and indoors at emergency incident sites, and in fire station facilities; requires strenuous physical efforts, and ability to lift and move items weighing up to one hundred pounds; may be exposed to environmental allergens, gases, fumes, hazardous chemicals, communicable diseases and potential physical harm. Functional vision and normal hearing to differentiate sounds (voice, horn) are required.  Must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards.

This is a non-exempt position; normal schedule is an assigned rotating shift of 48 hours on duty followed by 96 hours off duty. Schedule is subject to change based on department needs. May be required to work overtime.
