We're looking for a skilled Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) Nurse to join our Ambulatory Surgery Center in South Austin, TX.
Responsibilities
- Conducts pre-operative assessments via telephone, reviewing patient health history, current medications, allergies, and prior surgical history.
- Communicates pre-surgical instructions including NPO guidelines, medication holds, and arrival times based on procedure type and facility protocols.
- Documents all patient interactions, assessments, and education provided in the electronic medical record (EMR) accurately and in real time.
- Performs thorough chart reviews to verify completion of pre-operative requirements, including labs, clearances, and testing as applicable.
- Collaborates with anesthesia, providers, and other clinical team members regarding abnormal results, special patient needs, or pre-op optimization concerns.
- Educates patients and their families on the surgical process, what to expect on the day of surgery, and any follow-up steps needed.
- Conducts post-procedure follow-up calls per protocol to assess patient recovery and provide additional instructions as needed.
- Triages patient concerns received via phone, communicates with providers for further direction, and appropriately documents encounters in the EMR.
- Participates in quality assurance initiatives, nursing peer review processes, and supports compliance with documentation standards.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and adheres to HIPAA and organizational privacy guidelines at all times.
- Assists with additional administrative or compliance-related tasks as assigned to support the surgical center’s operational goals.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; successful completion of an accredited nursing program (LVN or RN) required.
- At least 2 years of relevant nursing experience preferred; experience in pre-operative care, ambulatory surgery, or telephone triage strongly preferred.
- Strong clinical judgment, communication, and critical thinking skills, with the ability to assess patient needs over the phone.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Cooperative and professional behavior toward patients, providers, peers, and visitors at all times.
- Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR); experience with systems such as NextGen, SIS Complete or ECW preferred.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and privacy regulations.
- Ability to contribute in a team environment and support the organization's quality and compliance initiatives.
Licenses & Certifications:
- Current state licensure as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or Registered Nurse (RN), in good standing.
- BLS certification required (or must be obtained within 3 months of hire). ACLS preferred but not required for phone-based roles.
