Coding Supervisor Position Summary
The Coding Supervisor oversees coding department staff and related charge posting and denial workflows. This position will develop and implement processes that support medical records coding, compliance auditing, and charge automation. The Coding Supervisor is responsible for optimizing the utilization of revenue cycle resources and balancing performance management with compliance adherence, while ensuring the company’s strategic objectives are met. This is a highly visible role that requires an individual who is motivational, goal-oriented, dependable, and relationship-driven. To be successful, the Supervisor must be able to achieve results from the team while maintaining employee job satisfaction.
Detailed Responsibilities
- Ensures the Medical Records Coding department meets or exceeds all departmental key performance indicators, including but not limited to: Days to Post, Coding Accuracy Rates, and Coding Denial Rates.
- Identifies and reports any potential problems or successes within the Coding team to leadership.
- Focuses on improving the quality, service, and efficiency of the Coding team. Delivers timely feedback and results. Seeks opportunities for staff development and implements effective training.
- Using data collection and reporting, develops goals and productivity targets for staff.
- Performs monthly random audits in accordance with the Company's compliance plan and escalates issues identified.
- Develop and implement compliance plans or projects to address deficiencies identified with manual coding or AI/automation processes.
- Work with appropriate department leadership and providers on dictation or documentation issues.
- Monitor and expand automation for coding processes.
- Review and approve bi-weekly timecards for payroll.
- Engages team by being available and providing support.
- Supports team and individuals in line with the Company’s mission, vision, values, and goals.
- Assist with interviewing and training new staff members as required.
- Coaches staff in problem-solving techniques along with alternative ways to accomplish tasks.
- Upholds and manages HR policies and procedures.
- Accepts escalated referring physician and patient calls, both positive and negative, to ensure quality and exceptional customer service.
- Assists with special cases and escalation calls (internal and external).
- Revise resource materials and job tools to reflect current practices and workflows.
- Build collaborative work relationships and serve as a liaison to other departments within SMIL.
- Facilitate and participate in meetings and other ad-hoc committees.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned or requested.
Coding Supervisor Specific Job Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
- Expert knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS Coding Systems, as well as claim forms such as CMS-1500.
- Expert knowledge of correct coding and medical necessity systems such as NCCI, LCD/NCD, and various commercial payer guidelines to maximize opportunity for reimbursement.
- Ability to think strategically and operationally, displaying analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact tactfully and diplomatically with patients, families, referring physicians, and internal staff to de-escalate complaints or issues.
- Demonstrates a pleasant disposition, positive attitude, and possesses the ability to maintain a friendly and professional approach during periods of stress.
- Fosters and reinforces team-based results.
- Ability to make sound, logical decisions that pertain to the team in the absence of the Manager.
- Highly proficient communication skills – conveys ideas in writing, verbally, telephonically, and in person.
- Ability to compose memorandums, emails, and letters using proper grammar.

- Demonstrates ability to handle multiple tasks with short timelines, prioritize, and organize work in a timely and accurate manner.
- Ability to administer disciplinary action and address other staff-related concerns. Work closely with the Manager if issues escalate above a warning.
- Ability to participate in special projects, complete assignments, and meet deadlines.
- Dependable and flexible with work schedule.
- Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook, with the ability to interpret professional documents.

Requirements
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- 2+ years of Supervisor or Team Lead experience preferred.
- 2+ years of Radiology Coding experience preferred.
- Professional certification through RCCB, AAPC, or AHIMA required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk and hear.
