Job Description Summary & Additional Information

The University Health Center is seeking hourly support for their medical billing operations in College Park, MD. Assist billing staff with billing and accounts receivable following established laws, procedures and guidelines. Maintain records of insurance and billing transactions.  Post and reconcile accounts in an electronic database.  Compile data for inclusion in a variety of reports.  Maintain manual and automated record keeping systems. Must be able to assess and evaluate cashiering and billing discrepancies and ensure accuracy and completeness of all financial documents.

This is an in-office position reporting to the office daily in College Park, MD. 

Duties:

  • Accurately process received checks to ensure timely deposits and record-keeping.
  • Submit claims through both electronic systems and by mailing HCFA forms to the designated insurance companies or addresses, ensuring compliance with all regulations.
  • Proactively communicate with students who have outstanding balances, urging them to respond promptly to avoid the escalation of their accounts to the bursar’s office.
  • Engage in meaningful conversations with insurance companies and patients to clarify and resolve any outstanding issues.
  • Address and resolve discrepancies with insurance companies regarding unreceived checks, ensuring that payments are collected promptly.
  • Diligently scan and organize important documents, such as Explanation of Benefits (EOBs), checks, and relevant correspondence, into the appropriate digital folders for easy access.
  • Efficiently process credit card payments electronically, ensuring all receipts are accurately filed for future reference.

Physical Demands:

Primarily involving sitting for extended periods with intermittent walking and standing. Tasks require fine motor skills for typing and operating office equipment, and may occasionally involve lifting or carrying items like files or office supplies weighing up to 25-30 pounds.

Preferences:

  • A solid background in billing, with experience in managing accounts receivable correspondence and maintaining detailed financial records.
  • Experience in medical billing and insurance revenue collections.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE: Three years accounting clerical experience.

OTHER:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

General knowledge of bookkeeping principles, mathematical methods and techniques and accounting standards. Skill in performing mathematical computations; in reviewing and processing financial documents; in reconciling financial data; in operating calculators, keyboards, manual and automated office equipment, personal computers and financial software; in inputting data. Ability to communicate effectively; to prepare written records and reports; to establish and maintain effective work relationships; to lead and train others in assigned accounting clerical or bookkeeping work.

OTHER:

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
