About the Department
Operates various trucks and equipment assigned to the Solid Waste and Recycling Department. Individual will provide pick up of recycling materials or refuse collection. Hauls and unloads refuse at the transfer station or recyclables at the recycling plant. Helps coordinate disposal times at the transfer station with drivers and contractors. Schedule times for drop-off at the Recycle Center to ensure staggered delivery times. Team Leader may assist the supervisor with customer service issues, transfer station coordination, and other collection issues. Individual will serve as backup to Collection Supervisor in his absence, and assist him with daily activities. Must supervise the team leaders and assign daily tasks and issues. Individual must also know each route and be available to substitute in any position should there be a need.
Position Duties
- Operates vehicles and equipment assigned to this department: Front-load overhead packer, rear-load packer, automated side loader, container delivery truck, pickup truck, bobcat, forklift, and other trucks and equipment assigned to the department.
- Supervises collection activities in the absence of the Collection Supervisor.
- Assists collection Supervisor with daily issues and activities, including being a substitute driver where needed.
- Supervises team leaders and assigned helpers, ensuring orderly collection of refuse and recyclables and customer satisfaction.
- Responsible for ensuring collection of refuse and recycling in accordance with department guidelines and city ordinances.
- May deliver, move, or relocate dumpster boxes at businesses and other locations using the container delivery truck.
- Hauls refuse to transfer station and unload contents of the vehicle; Hauls and unloads recycling materials at the recycling plant or other designated area.
- Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment including cleaning and sanitizing.
- Report equipment malfunctions and problems to the Shop Supervisor.
- Report complaints from citizens, problems, or unusual situations to the Supervisor.
- Represent the department and the City of Florence in a friendly, tactful, and courteous manner.
- Coordinates delivery to the recycle center and transfer station for all materials and works with personnel from both to ensure good workflow and resolve any issues in a timely manner.
- Assists supervisor in the location of dumpster, garbage, and recycling containers for proper service.
- Meets with businesses to coordinate their services
- Monitors routes for evenness and efficiency
- Monitors dumpsters and bins for unacceptable materials and reports this to businesses.
- This department may require employees to perform a variety of other assigned duties.
- Shifts may vary according to the needs of the city.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have a Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement and 3 or more years of driving and refuse collection experience.
- Must be a high school graduate or GED certificate.
Other Qualifications
- Knowledge of City of Florence streets and established routes used by this Department.
- Knowledge of traffic safety rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance for vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to learn department rules and regulations.
- Ability to use two-way radio using FCC rules and regulations.
- Ability to drive in adverse conditions.
- Ability to handle customer complaints in a tactful and courteous manner.
- Ability to read, write, and understand material related to the position.
- Ability to coordinate with personnel to ensure routes are completed as required.
Supervision:
Employee may be required to work independently without direct supervision.
Physical Demands (with or without accommodations):
- Ability to stoop, bend, and climb in and out of equipment.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds (more on occasion).
- Ability to work under stressful situations.
- Ability to work with constant exposure to heat, cold, dampness, noise, vibration, and other disagreeable work conditions.
- Ability to work in and around moving equipment and/or vehicles.
- Subject to be called out in times of emergencies.

- Various trucks (front loader, rear loader, automated side loader, and curbside collection truck, pickup truck, etc.)
- Skid steer loader
- Forklift
- Two-way radio
- Shovel, broom, and other cleaning tools
- Grease guns
