Woodberry Forest School, located in Madison, VA, is an exceptional private boarding school community for high school boys in grades nine through twelve. It is one of the top boarding schools in the United States and one of the only all-boys, all-boarding schools in the country. Woodberry's 1,200-acre campus is the largest for boarding schools in Virginia, and one of the largest private school campuses in the country.
The Food Service Director (FSD) oversees all dining services of the school, including daily meals, and catering for events on campus. The Food Service Director is responsible for designing and producing menus, digitizing menu and inventory management, planning and executing catering events, managing ordering, inventory, and the food service team of 30+ FTE’s. The FSD will work closely with other departments to plan and organize the food service for the day-to-day life of the school, as well as special events on campus.
Unlike many independent schools, Woodberry’s food service department is managed internally, and all of the employees are employed by the school. As employees of the school, all food service personnel are part of a community dedicated to the 400 boys who attend the school and play an important role in sustaining and contributing to the positive, supportive culture of the school. The Director, Food Services leads the food service department in ways that are consistent with the culture of the school.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide positive dining experiences for all members of the campus community consistent with the mission, values, and community of the school. Ensure the highest standards of food quality and customer service.
- Lead and direct the Food Services Department Staff (30+ FTE’s, including 3 supervisors), including assisting with recruiting and hiring, guiding, coaching, setting goals, scheduling, training, developing, monitoring, and assessing performance, and maintaining positive employee relations.
- Oversee catering activities on campus for various events
- Leadership from the front with the hands-on-style essential for success
- Ongoing knowledge and education of trends in the food service industry, including nutritional requirements for various stakeholders
- Oversee the purchase, delivery and storage of food supplies; maintain adequate inventories and ensure standards of quality are met.
- Implement a comprehensive and interactive menu and inventory management system
- Maintaining food cost while ensuring quality standards.
- Responsible for the food service budgets.
- Assist in the preparation of meals, as necessary.
- Participate on the school’s health and wellness team as necessary.
- Willing to work extended hours and weekends per the needs of the department
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Knowledge:
Strong commitment to a positive food service experience for the campus community.
Ability to develop and analyze food menus and options
Flexibility to work with other departments of the school
Ability to manage and plan an effective team; function independently; exercise sound judgment and initiative
Familiar with the use and operation of computers and food service software platforms.
Background:
10 years of related experience, including food service management and culinary experience preferred.
Knowledge of food preparation and modified diets.
Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
Knowledge of local and state health regulations
Ability to multi-task and work in a team environment with a commitment to community and to build positive relationships.
Strong communication skills.
