Position Summary:
Reporting to the Executive Director, People, Talent & Wellness, the Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) is the senior HR & labour professional assigned to a client portfolio. They work with an exceptional degree of independence to manage a full suite of human resource related business enabling activities across Carewest and with external stakeholders, with a primary focus on the employment & labour relationship across Carewest and with external stakeholders. The incumbent is able to resolve non-standard matters that may not be firmly rooted in policy or process that requires advanced interpretation or synthesis of information that is available internally or externally to Carewest. The HRBP, through analysis and sound judgement, provides effective recommendations and advice to site & corporate leadership on these matters, and is able to clearly articulate rationale that is balanced against enterprise risk, professional HR practice, and operational requirements that align with Carewest’s Frame of Reference.
The HRBP works in concert with others in the Human Resources portfolio to ensure consistency of interpretation and application of HR processes & programs across assigned portfolio and Carewest as a whole. The HRBP bridges strategic partnering and tactical performance, and contains an element of transactional work to support business processes. Is responsible for providing employee and labour relations advice, expertise and coaching on investigative processes, disciplinary outcomes, interpretation of collective agreements, non-union directives, policies, legislation, and jurisprudence, coaching and advice on performance management, coaching and assistance in conflict resolution, and a wide variety of other organizational matters. This is achieved through a combination of technical expertise and building strong relationships, including the employer-union relationship through effective facilitation and consultation. The HRBP represents Carewest as corporate representative and advisor to counsel in grievance arbitration, litigation, and quasi-judicial forums. In these matters, the HRBP provides strategic, expert labour relations advice on the handling and disposition of labour & employment matters. Key accountabilities also include supporting collective bargaining activities, preparing ad hoc and regular management reports that support the business, monitoring and forecasting trends, strong liaison with the broader HR teams (Compensation & Benefits, Employee Health & Safety, Staff Scheduling, and Communications), participation in committee and project work, and identifying key issues and opportunities for improvement. Responsible for other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- University degree in related field required.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Professional designation (CPHR, CIPD) preferred.
- Equivalences in education & experience reasonably considered.
- This is a vehicle-required position.
- A valid unrestricted driver’s license is required to be maintained, along with access to a reliable vehicle.
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years (7 years preferred) of human resources experience supporting front-line management with a focus on employee & labour relations, or equivalent people leadership and consultative experience.
- Experience in a multi-union and multi-site environment an asset.
- Desirable experience includes backgrounds in conflict resolution, organizational effectiveness, change management, collective bargaining, and training & development.
