Position Opening: Middle School 7th Grade Dean


Job Title:       Middle School Grade-Level Dean

Department:      Middle School

Reports To:   Middle School Principal

Classification: Exempt - Faculty

Overview:  Dwight-Englewood School, the largest independent school in Bergen County, NJ, and a growing, vibrant, and diverse learning community in the New York City metro area, is seeking to fill one of the three Middle School Grade Level Dean positions.  The position requires an outstanding individual with a big picture perspective of schools, learning, and children who can lead and support students and work collaboratively with colleagues.  The Grade Level Dean will have the opportunity of developing grade level culture and systems with their colleagues on the 7th grade team.  The Dean is also expected to work collaboratively across divisions to maintain an integrated K-12 organization with strong, functional, student-focused systems.  


Essential Responsibilities: Culture, Coordination, Discipline and Logistics 

  • Actively support the Mission of the School and put that vision into daily practice.

  • Lead the grade level group of approximately 85 students and oversee them in all aspects of their life at school.

  • Work closely with the Middle School Principal and the Middle School Admin team to develop the future direction of the Middle School as well as facilitating the daily implementation of the program.

  • Lead the grade level advisors in dealing with student academic, social, and emotional concerns including collaborating closely with the school counselor and DEIB coordinator to ensure a holistic approach to student support and  to ensure student growth.

  • Act as point person for the grade with regard to student discipline and parent communication.

  • Run weekly holistic grade team meetings focused on student concerns and support.

  • Collaborate closely with the grade-level team leader, teachers and advisors to nurture a class culture that celebrates our core values in 7th-grade ways

  • Cultivate a positive parent culture through parent-forums and direct and consistent communications to families.

  • Help plan and execute the daily events of the grade level, as well as coordinate the student overnight trips for the grade level, and grade-level participation in service learning and community engagement.

  • Teach two sections of a class (or their equivalent) in the Middle School, starting in the 2026-2027 school year.  


Desired Qualities:

The ideal candidate will offer most or all of the following qualities or characteristics as well as the qualifications that follow:

  • A true love of working with Middle School aged students and a depth of knowledge around their development.

  • Be present, approachable, encouraging, and positive.

  • Experience with restorative justice, conflict mediation, or similar student-growth-based discipline models.

  • Authenticity in engagement and being part of the internal and external community.

  • Clear, consistent, and dynamic communication with the ability to genuinely connect and listen to students, teachers, and parents. 

  • Balanced in leadership philosophy; using both one’s heart and head when making decisions. 

  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse educational environment.

  • Experience leading teams of students and adults.

  • Strong collaborative focus and desire to work closely with the Admin team to plan, solve problems, and coordinate across grade levels.

  • A growth mindset.

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, facility with Google suite of office tech tools

Position Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred).

  • At least five years of teaching experience, with a strong background in Middle School instruction, with some form of leadership experience.

  • Personal and professional alignment to the school’s mission, vision, and values.

  • Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, multiculturalism, and anti-bias education in all aspects of the work with Middle School students, families, and colleagues.

  • Excellent oral, written, and electronic communication skills.

  • Leadership of after-school activities (in athletics, the arts, or other programs).

  • Fulfill occasional night and weekend responsibilities that support the School  and help build its community


Terms of Employment:

  • The first day of employment is the first day of the second semester, January 20th, 2026. 

  •  This is an extended teaching position with administrative duties. Deans return to school one week before the faculty arrive in August, and remain one week after the faculty depart in June. 

  • Professional days are considered work days and participation in planned activities is mandatory.


Salaries for faculty range from $62,000 to $120,000+ and are determined by years of experience and education level attained.
