JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Business Manager provides direction, management, and supervision of recovery operations and business functions for the Lab Animal Care Unit (LACU). Specific responsibilities include financial planning, budget coordination, billing system analysis and data management, financial viability and strategic planning, detailed cost analysis of animal per diem and research support services, and day-to-day business operations. This position also serves as backup to the other VCR Business Managers when needed for fiscal responsibilities.
Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develops, implements, and monitors internal control processes, and information flows to ensure integrity of all fiscal functions; reviews and allocates all expenses to appropriate costing system to determine actual expenses.
Manages and analyzes the LACU billing systems (ACIM) and creates new processes as needed in collaboration with the Office of Electronic Research Administration.
Corresponds with research faculty and staff to evaluate, troubleshoot, and resolve issues related to animal care billing or with ACIM.
Develops metrics to set goals and direct preparation of annual budgets and forecasts by gathering information from investigators and university grant databases to estimate yearly husbandry demands.
Optimizes appropriate fiscal strategies to enhance recovery from internal and external customers.
Oversees regular fiscal operations including approvals in the university’s ERP system of contracts, procurement card expenditures, payroll, purchase orders, invoices, receivables, effort certifications, travel, and internal transfers.
Evaluates and advises on the financial impact of long-range planning, the introduction of new programs, and business strategies.
Monitors, evaluates, and advises on the fiscal performance of LACU compared to budget and forecast.
Provides direct day-to-day administration and supervision of direct reports; in coordination with Directors of LACU, performs various personnel functions including hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, terminations, and leave schedules.
Supervises and manages LACU support staff, including conducting work-related performance evaluations.
Reviews and approves listserv announcements and manages updates to web pages, including the LACU price rate schedules.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Management, Public Administration, or a related field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of business management experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Proficient and skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access), and in various database management software programs.
Ability to have good judgment.
Ability to evaluate and implement work priorities.
Ability to multitask, pay attention to detail, and meet multiple deadlines.
Ability to assess strengths and weaknesses of business office staff and utilize these for effective operation of the office.
Ability to be professional in interactions with people within and outside the department and have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work evenings and weekends
