Senior Component Cost Estimation Consultant (Design-to-Cost)

Location: Auburn Hills, MI (Onsite)
Team: Munro & Associates
Type: Full-time

About Munro

Munro & Associates helps manufacturers design and build better, more profitable products and processes. We pair engineering rigor with lean, design-led problem solving to deliver rapid, measurable cost reductions across products and production. Our commercial team works with U.S. manufacturers to simplify designs, select smarter processes, and accelerate decisions with clear, defensible numbers.

The Opportunity

We’re hiring a Senior Component Cost Estimation Consultant who can build rock-solid should-costs and also spark creative redesigns that make parts cheaper, simpler, and easier to produce. You’ll analyze BOMs and drawings, tear down components, model costs bottom-up and parametrically, and then propose smart alternatives—materials, processes, tolerances, and part consolidation—that unlock real savings without compromising performance.

This role blends cost modeling depth with industrial-design-grade visualization and storytelling to align engineers, buyers, and executives around the best path forward.

What You’ll Do

  • Own should-costs for mechanical/electromechanical parts and subassemblies using bottom-up, parametric, and analogy approaches; validate with teardowns and trials.
  • Translate numbers into decisions: side-by-side concept options with clear cost deltas, risks, and manufacturability impacts (DFMA).
  • Drive creative cost-downs: propose design simplifications, alternative processes (e.g., die casting vs. machining, progressive stamping vs. laser+brake), tolerance right-sizing, and finish/material swaps.
  • Partner with supply chain & engineering: support sourcing strategies, supplier conversations, and fact-based negotiations with transparent cost breakdowns.
  • Model production realities: cycle time, utilization/OEE, scrap/yield, learning curves, logistics, and regional cost factors.
  • Lead workshops (VA/VE): high-energy ideation sprints that move stakeholders from current state → concept shortlist → implementation roadmap.
  • Quantify impact: create before/after economics (unit cost, annualized savings, payback) and feed dashboards (PowerBI/Excel) for executive readouts.
  • Contribute IP: build cost libraries, process rate tables, and reusable playbooks for Munro’s commercial practice.

What You’ll Bring

  • 6–12+ years in cost engineering/estimation, value engineering, manufacturing engineering, or sourcing for complex mechanical parts.
  • Demonstrated should-cost expertise across common processes: injection molding, die casting, machining, stamping, sheet metal, extrusion, simple composites, coatings/finishes, and basic electronics integration/assembly.
  • Ability to read drawings/CAD, interpret GD&T, and tie tolerances and features to cost drivers.
  • Proficiency with Excel (advanced), and familiarity with tools like aPriori, SEER, Costimator, or in-house calculators; PowerBI a plus.
  • Strong visual storytelling—sketching/storyboards or quick CAD markups to communicate cost drivers and redesign ideas.
  • Confidence on the shop floor: time studies, fixture/operation insights, and pragmatic tradeoffs.
  • Clear, concise communication with executives, engineers, buyers—and the ability to keep momentum high.

Bonus Points

  • Experience supporting supplier negotiations with transparent cost build-ups.
  • Knowledge of DFMA, PFMEA basics, and tolerance analysis for cost.
  • Exposure to electromechanical assemblies, PCBA cost levers (at a high level), and system-level tradeoffs.
  • Savings track record with documented before/after results.

Why Munro

  • Immediate, measurable impact: real cost reductions and simpler designs—fast.
  • Variety & challenge: industrial, white goods, building products, off-highway, electronics, and more.
  • High-energy culture: builders who value clarity, speed, and outcomes.
  • Growth path: shape Munro’s design-to-cost playbooks; mentor rising talent.
  • Competitive package: salary + performance bonus, strong benefits, and the tools to win.
