Title:                       Substation Technician

Reports to:          Supervisor, Substation Maintenance

Department:        Power Delivery



Purpose:

To provide support services in processing, maintaining, repairing and testing substation equipment to ensure safe and proper operation, recycling and/or disposal. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduate.
  • Associate degree in pre-engineering, electric studies, or related program; OR the completion of an electrical apprentice program; OR 5 years of specific job-related experience.
  • Must have the ability to acquire and maintain a valid Georgia commercial driver’s license (Class A) and DOT certification within 6 months of being in the position.
  • Employee is expected to become a certified mobile crane operator, progress and complete NGEMC Substation Technician Program, and attain ITS certification within 6 months of being in the position.

Preferred:

  • Electrical Controls Wiring Experience



Job Functions:

  • Ability to safely work near voltages up to 230,000 volts.
  • Safely operate company cars, trucks and other equipment.
  • Test, repair and maintain all types of single phase and three phase transformers.
  • Test, program and maintain reclosers, regulators and capacitor controls.
  • Perform monthly inspections of substations and down line equipment, e.g., CAP banks, reclosers, breakers, etc.
  • Perform quarterly industrial substation inspections.
  • Test and maintenance substation control house batteries quarterly.
  • Perform repair, maintenance, and warehousing functions for Power Delivery.
  • Accumulate retired transformers for recycling.
  • Assist with Environmental and Regulatory compliance.
  • Assist in the restoration of power outages, as directed, e.g., locate underground faults.
  • Collect oil samples for transformers, load tap changers and regulators.
  • Help clean up oil spills and other types of various spills.
  • Maintain and test all oil-filled and gas-filled substation equipment.
  • Test, service, operate, install and troubleshoot substation equipment,g., line voltage regulators, control panels, and control wiring.
  • Install down line equipment.
  • Test, service, operate, and Install SCADA equipment.
  • Conduct infrared scanning of substation and field apparatus equipment.
  • Maintain accurate record keeping.
  • Assist in Apparatus Shop as needed.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated computer skills utilizing windows-based programs.
  • Ability to safely operate underground fault locating equipment, a tractor and other heavy equipment, e.g., track hoe, skid-steer, etc.
  • Ability to gain an understanding of North Georgia EMC policies and procedures, environmental regulations and National Electric Safety Code Requirements.

Physical Demands:

All requirements are subject to possible modification to reasonably accommodate individuals with disabilities (some requirements may exclude individuals who pose a direct threat or significant risk to the health and safety of themselves or other employees.). Requires physical ability in climbing, balancing, stooping, pushing, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, the ability to lift small objects with the fingers, grasping, talking, hearing, and is defined heavy work.  Requires visual acuity in machine operation. Maintain a body weight of less than 275 pounds in order to safely operate and conduct work using a bucket truck and climb a ladder while carrying necessary tools. Exposure to outside environmental conditions on a frequent basis.

 

Working Conditions:

Primarily field work. Some general office duties. Requires the flexibility to work irregular hours for assignment completion; requires the ability to work during emergency situations and availability during inclement weather. Requires the flexibility to be on call, as needed.
