PRESCHOOL TEACHER
DEFINITION
Under direction to instruct preschool students; to help develop health habits, attitudes, values, and knowledge of each student; and to do related work as required. Preschool Teacher positions are divided into two classifications determined by educational qualifications; that is, Preschool Teacher with a Bachelors Degree and a child care certificate and Preschool Teacher without a Bachelors Degree, but with a child care certificate. The basic duties are the same; placement on the classified salary schedule is determined by educational qualifications.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
· Maintains a classroom atmosphere and program which enhances children’s readiness for later entry into regular school;
· Independently prioritizes and manages work load;
· Provides positive and stimulating leadership to the students, parents, and Instructional Aides;
· Trains, confers and interacts with parents of preschool students in support of student learning;
· Maintains comprehensive instructional and planning records and produces reports by deadlines as required;
· Reads and understands the policies of the district;
· Assists in the planning and evaluation of the preschool program;
· Assists in testing as required;
· Assists preschool children with establishing good eating and hygiene habits;
· Accompanies students on field trips.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Teaching methods and basic curriculum for preschool children;
Safety practices;
Basic school policies and regulations;
Basic state and federal guidelines of the preschool program;
Proper English, grammar, vocabulary and arithmetic;
Basic methods, techniques, and requirements for the care and supervision of preschool children.
Personnel Services (over)
Ability to:
Communicate and work with preschool students and adults;
Understand and follow oral and written instructions;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
Work without supervision;
Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
Supervise the activities of students, both indoors and outdoors.
Read and comprehend handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various equipment and machines.
Stand for sustained periods of time.
Concentrate on current task in spite of distractions in an active, busy environment.
Demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to classroom instruction and activities.
Work with cleaning solutions, disinfectants and sanitizers in a safe and effective manner without allergic reaction.
Assist preschool-aged students with meal activities, hygiene, first aid, and toileting as required.
Lift preschool-aged children.
Deal with hostile, emotional, ill or angry persons in an effective manner.
Effectively perform intervention procedures to prevent fights and other altercations.
Work on more than one task at a time.
Maintain regular, steady attendance.
Experience:
At least one year as a preschool aide is preferred; prior classroom teaching experience with primary age children is also preferred.
Education:
Prefer Bachelors Degree; will accept combination of experience and education that would qualify the applicant for child care certificate.
Personal Qualities:
Highly motivated, sound judgment; good physical condition; patience; willingness to perform job tasks; reliable; dependable.
