Job Summary

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Research Lab Operations Manager will support cutting-edge research in the fields of neuroscience, human stem cell biology, in vivo pharmacology, and chemical biology. Will work collaboratively with lab leadership and others in all aspects of laboratory management and operations for all projects in a highly collaborative manner within MGH and externally. Will manage medium to large-scale projects as assigned, take ownership of the project lifecycle, facilitate communication, monitor progress toward project goals, and provide support to team members and stakeholders as they complete essential tasks.


 

Qualifications

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work collaboratively with leadership to support all aspects of lab organization, logistics, operations, and maintenance.
  • Manage medium to large-scale projects within an assigned functional area such as, but not limited to, identify and manage external in vivo compound testing
  • Advise and support on all aspects of medicinal chemistry efforts
  • Manage for all aspects of Compound management, 
  • Oversee development and implementation of electronic notebook for large scale projects
  • Participate in designing, developing, and implementing novel assay capabilities.
  • Manage the organization and upkeep of equipment such as fridges and freezers, ordering and restocking of reagents and consumables, including developing and maintaining vendor relationships.
  • Administer all safety and compliance matters.
  • Oversee and coordinate developing, collection of, and accurate recording of standard operating procedures and results, maintenance of lab databases.
  • Organize and maintain cell repository, chemical inventory, general inventory, data repository.
  • Develop and implement lab’s policies and procedures in conjunction with PI and lab leadership.
  • Support and execute animal colony management and maintenance.
  • Assist in the design, execution, documentation, and interpretation of research experiments and results.
  • Performs other duties and participates on committees, projects and operational improvement as assigned.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

  • Advanced level of understanding and demonstrated skill in laboratory operations and management.
  • Application of extensive laboratory skill to execute research and other scientific activities, including experiments, preparation of data and reports and colony management.
  • Competency with rodent handling, husbandry and survival surgeries.
  • Able to learn, developing and apply new techniques and capabilities is essential.
  • Ability to work independently, multi-task, work with deadlines, and adapt to changes is required. 
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written needed.
  • Attention to detail, consistency and standardized methodologies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, fast paced, team-oriented environment is necessary.
  • Highly motivated and energetic.
  • Excellent organizational skills are a must.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and analytical skills required.
  • Strong computer and database skills.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS:

EDUCATION:  

Minimum education:  Bachelor’s degree in scientific discipline required with Master’s preferred.

EXPERIENCE:          

7+ years of previous progressively more responsible hands-on research laboratory experience in a related field required.  Experience with molecular biology, biochemical assays desired.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILTY:

Prudent use of hospital resources and cost-effective ordering of supplies.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY (authority to hire, promote, or terminate):

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Normal conditions associated with research laboratory and office settings.  Includes periods of prolonged sitting, standing and computer work.  Hazards may include exposure to chemicals, laboratory equipment and animal matter.
