As L.A.'s premier performing arts destination, The Music Center convenes artists, communities and ideas with the goal of deepening the cultural lives of every resident in Los Angeles County. The $80 million non-profit performing arts organization has three divisions: TMC Arts, TMC Ops and TMC Business Services. TMC Arts, The Music Center’s programming engine, provides year-round programming inside The Music Center’s four theatres, which include Walt Disney Concert Hall, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Ahmanson Theatre and Mark Taper Forum; on Jerry Moss Plaza; outside at Gloria Molina Grand Park, a 12-acre adjacent green space; and in schools and neighborhoods all over Los Angeles County. TMC Arts presents world-class dance with Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center, free and low-cost public concerts and events, as well as K–12 arts learning programs, workshops, performances, interactive experiences and special events. TMC Ops manages the theatres, Jerry Moss Plaza and Gloria Molina Grand Park, which comprise $3 billion in county assets, on behalf of the County of Los Angeles. TMC Business Services includes Advancement, Human Resources, Finance, Tech Services, and Marketing and Communications. The Music Center is also home to four renowned resident companies—Center Theatre Group, Los Angeles Master Chorale, LA Opera and LA Phil.

 POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of People and Culture, the HR Director provides strategic leadership and oversight of all human resources functions across the organization, including talent acquisition, employee relations, performance management, compensation, organizational development, and compliance. This role is a key member of the executive team, partnering with leadership to drive organizational culture, employee engagement, and HR initiatives while ensuring best practices in HR and talent management.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES TO INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Develop and implement HR strategies aligned with the organization’s mission, goals, and values.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on complex employee relations, organizational design, and workforce planning.
  • Drive initiatives to enhance employee engagement, leadership development, and retention.
  • Lead the development and execution of key HR initiatives and programs.
  • Oversee the full lifecycle recruitment process for all divisions, ensuring best-in-class candidate experiences.
  • Partner with leadership to identify critical talent needs, succession planning, and organizational growth.
  • Guide performance management processes, including goal setting, performance evaluations, and development plans.
  • Serve as the primary resource for complex employee relations issues, conflict resolution, investigations, and employment terminations.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, collective bargaining agreements, and recommended HR best practices.
  •  Advise on policy interpretation and proactively identify opportunities to enhance HR policies and practices.
  • Provide strategic oversight of compensation and benefits programs to attract, retain, and motivate staff.
  • Conduct market analyses and make recommendations to ensure competitive, equitable pay practices.
  • Optimize HR processes, including onboarding, offboarding, HRIS management, and reporting.
  • Evaluate and implement HR technology solutions to improve efficiency and data-driven decision-making.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the HR team, fostering a high-performance, collaborative, and professional environment.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and excellence across the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

Basic Qualifications: 

  • 10+ years progressive HR experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role overseeing multi-functional HR responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated expertise in employee relations, performance management, compensation, organizational development, and HR initiatives.
  • Experience advising senior leadership on complex HR issues.
  • Strong knowledge of employment laws, regulations, and HR best practices.
  • Proficiency with HRIS systems (ADP preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite.

 

Desired Skills:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred; Master’s degree a plus.
  • PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP certification desired.
  • Experience in the arts, non-profit, or cultural sectors highly valued.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.

Salary: 

This will be an exempt position. The salary for this position is $175,000/year. Compensation package includes medical, dental, and vision health plans, welfare insurance benefits, a 401(k) plan with employer contribution, and paid vacation and sick days.  

Schedule:

The weekly administrative schedule is 35 hours per week, approximately 9 am – 5 pm Monday to Friday, with adjustments to accommodate special events and activities.  Currently, The Music Center practices a hybrid (remote with scheduled onsite team days) weekly schedule and work onsite/in person for live events, which may require on-site support. This scenario may change and is also subject to the responsibilities of the position.
