Description

The Lifeguards' primary duties, under direct supervision, include operating several indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities, ensuring the safety of patrons, upholding established policies and procedures, and leading swimming lessons and other aquatic programs.

Essential Job Duties

  • Provide respectful, professional, positive service in all interactions between co-workers, internal and external customers, community members, and the public at large.
  • Maintain a positive and productive environment ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, goals and objectives of the City, Department and Division.
  • Works to prevent accidents and eliminate hazards in and around the pool and deck areas to provide an enjoyable experience for the public.
  • Respond quickly to emergency situations and administers first aid to accident victims, when needed. 
  • Monitor pool zones in assigned areas address behavioral infractions or safety concerns.
  • Educate patrons and informs them of the purpose of and need for rules and regulations.
  • Enforce rules and policies courteously but firmly.
  • Attend mandatory in-service training.
  • Clean pool deck, stainless steel, restrooms, guard office, and vacuum pool.
  • Provide information and assistance to patrons.
  • Provide private, semi-private, or group swimming lessons.
  • Work collaboratively with peers and supervisors on creating, developing, and maintaining a sense of teamwork among lifeguards.

This is a part-time position not to exceed an average of 29 hours per week.

Qualifications


Job Qualifications Education, experience, and training that are required or desirable in order to effectively perform the job at the time of hire. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements and/or substitutions may be requested and require the approval of HR.

  • Lifeguard certification required by opening of pools to public.
  • Prior experience as a lifeguard desired.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications are required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities May be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly associated with this position.

  • Knowledge of pool operation guidelines and principles.
  • Knowledge of pool chemicals.
  • Knowledge of water rescue techniques.
  • Skill in decision-making and problem solving.
  • Ability to work independently and make responsible decisions.
  • Ability to use good judgment and think quickly and rationally in difficult or stressful situations.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential job duty.

Work Environment Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the duties of this job.

  • Primarily an outdoor work environment.
  • Exposed to inclement weather and, at times, extreme heat.
  • Exposed to loud noise and irritating chemicals.
