Job Summary

 

The Strategy & Portfolio Management Analyst will be responsible for supporting a multitude of strategy-related activities, including Strategic Planning, Economics, Financial Modeling, Macro Environment, Peer Analytics and Ad-hoc Analysis as requested from Executive Leadership.

 

The Strategy & Portfolio Management Analyst will work in our Houston Corporate office and work up to two (2) days a week remotely, as business needs allow.

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Supports the review and analysis of project economics related to Murphy’s portfolio of projects and the development of the associated Long-Range Plan (LRP)
  • Supports the optimization of Murphy’s consolidated portfolio to efficiently allocate capital across different price environments, while accounting for different objective functions / constraints
  • Prepare analysis for different types of Scenarios (e.g., M&A, Exploration Success, Hedging Strategies, Alternative capital structures, etc.)
  • Translate certain strategic scenarios and assumptions into corporate pro-forma cash flow statements, income statements, and balance sheets; as well as key KPIs such as total shareholder return, leverage ratios, ROACE, NAVs, etc.
  • Undertake research on relevant macroeconomic and market trends; some of which may be used in the annual Strategic plan that is prepared and distributed to the executive team and board of directors
  • Own and execute ad-hoc requests that originate from executive leadership or the board of directors with minimal direction / guidance
  • Perform quarterly & annual analysis on how Murphy is performing relative to other peers
  • Prepare analysis for board of director / finance committee meetings which may involve summarizing regular work products as well as ad-hoc work
  • Leverage third-party research and data platforms to supplement analytical deliverables

 

 

 

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, or Planning
  • Minimum 6 years’ experience of Economic/Financial Modeling
  • Advanced: MS Excel, MS PowerPoint

 

The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions.  Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs.  The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

 

Desired/Preferred Qualifications 

  • Oil & Gas (E&P) experience preferred
  • Experience leveraging different systems and applications in daily workflows
  • Experience maintaining financial models / involved in forecasting processes
  • Ability to work independently on unstructured requests with little oversight / direction
  • Ability to accomplish urgent tasks quickly when speed is a high priority
  • Ability to take initiative / ownership of projects & deliverables
  • Ability to self-teach new concepts / software with minimal manager involvement (i.e., leveraging public information or existing reports/documentation)
